New Windows 8 system? Hope you're not in a hurry to use it

First of all, an OOBE should be just that. If necessary, plug the device in and turn it on. The act of doing updates has nothing to do with an OOBE. Secondly, why is this individual getting so excited about a device that uses an Atom Processor?

The check for Windows Updates unsurprisingly showed 59 available. Most were security updates but there were some others mixed in. I told Windows to apply the updates and then the fun really began

That guy is a DOPE! You NEVER Install ALL of the available updates at once! Some of them, are pretty involved, and can take 15 minutes to download and install just by themselves.

I would have done it a few at a time, starting with what is the most important. And I NEVER install "Security Downdates". Not unless it is a Combo Update, or a Sec Update for Dot Net. THOSE are important.

Forget about the Windows updates, the whole first time use setup is what takes forever. For my ASUS laptop I had to select the language "English" then site back and watch endless reboots and "Installing Programs" prompts. It was over an hour before I could actually log in and then do the Windows updates. I just did a factory restore on a friends laptop and it was the same story only it took even longer as it had to reimage a partition or two before even getting to the language selection screen.

I'm a compulsive updater !

I really wish MS would make a condensed roll up pack about every six months which Windows update could utilize instead of downloading hundreds of individual updates. Considering all the time spent updating stuff in Windows, it seems like this would be a worthwhile effort for a small group of developers to manage

First of all, when you get a rechargeable battery powered device, always let the battery charge until fully charged and a bit beyond, most of them need time to form properly. Failing to do that can shorten it's life a lot (it's usually in the manual).
When installing W8 you have an option to update before it is completely installed if connected to internet at the time. As mentioned before, the best way to update is doing it one by one (in the order of release) or at least in small batches as a small glitch in transmission can make problems and only when you are sure that everything is running all right. MS does release updates in batches, they have so called Tuesday, Thursday or whatever batch updates and you can find their descriptions on numerous sites.
And oh yes, i was in i hurry to use win8 (just as much as for as for all previous ones including ver.2 ) ever since Alpha, on the dual boot with older version and never regretted it.

I've never bought a single computing device without these two characteristics, including Google and apple products. But now that its a windows 8 device, it is the end of the world.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying windows 8 devices are perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I've got my own list of gripes about windows 8 and windows 8 devices.

But this monkey see monkey do criticisms of windows 8 and windows devices are getting old and annoying.

When android tablets first came out in competition with the ipad, I remember reading criticisms of android tablets everywhere. Some are legit and some are just downright monkey-see-monkey-do bandwagon.

I kid you not, one time I even read a criticism of the xoom because it was "cold when first picked up". Yeah, like the ipad in the middle of December is always warm when you first picked it up.

Tech bloggers and reviewers have a lot of authority in the tech world simply because most people are tech illiterate and so they depend on these articles to decide what they need and what they want. Take me, for example. I'm usually the go-to guy among my friends and family. They always come to me and ask me what they should get, I tell them what they should get, and they actually would go out to best buy the next day to get that very thing. I've recommended everything from a Celeron laptop to an android nexus device to an ipad. My next door neighbor came to ask me which PC he should get from best buy. I asked him what he'll be using it for, he told me everything he needed it for, and I told him a couple of models from his options. Last night he told me he actually got the PC I recommended.

The point is tech bloogers and reviewers need to be more impartial than this. They have a responsibility to the average user to be impartial. I don't care if they tell people to get a mac or ipad. I really don't. What I do mind is this monkey-see-monkey-do business form of criticism.

There have been reports of iOS devices taking hours and hours to do upgrades. And all rechargeable devices require an initial charge of at least 5-8 hours before use if people want to maximize their battery lifespan. It's simply astonishing that this piece of article actually got published at all. It's even more astonishing that this made it to the news section of this forum.

Security updates are available on ISO-9660 DVD5 image files from the Microsoft Download Center

I'm still a fan of getting the drivers off the vendor, and doing a clean install from my MDT environment with a WSUS server. I can usually build Windows 8 on an Atom device in about 45 minutes, including Office and all security updates. If a device requires BIOS or firmware updates, this might be an hour instead, but it's not 4-5 hours by any stretch. Something seems fishy about that story, honestly. I don't know what it is, but something's not right there.

I used to ignore those updates as well. In fact, before windows 8 I always had my update feature turned off.

The point is this article only proves that people (bloggers and reviewers) are at this point just looking for a reason to criticize windows 8. Doesn't matter anymore if the reason is real or imaginary. And chances are you will have to charge before you use it.

Updates have always been there in all devices across all platforms. If you recently bought an ipad, chances are you will have updates waiting for you.

But look, it's windows 8, and it's the end of the world if a new windows 8 device has updates.

I'm willing to bet soon we will be seeing these monkeys criticize windows 8 because #8 is just 5 numbers away from the unlucky 13 and that the impending red giant that our sun will turn into will be the direct result of metro interface.

To criticize means you care, to criticize is good but there are some caveats that come with it. First, it has to be argumented, "I don't like it" does not count as an argument it's just a personal opinion, be it about art or whatever. Unsubstantiated, uninformed and opinionated criticizing is detrimental to the critic as his work can not be taken seriously. Those "copy-paste" critics are probably the worst kind, they mostly do not even have their own opinion, let alone knowledge of what are they talking about.
Yes, I do not like some paintings, some music, books, films or whatever but honestly, I can't say they are good or bad without knowing a lot about their respective genres.
So much for my opinion of those "critics" to which I can not give any creditability as that comes under general cultural education which they obviously lack.
