Microsoft will reportedly unveil major restructuring Thurs

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer is expected to unveil a dramatic and long-awaited restructuring at the tech titan as early as Thursday, according to AllThingsD.
Ballmer is expected to re-align the company around service (software) and devices, both in the consumer and business sectors. Ballmer might have already laid the groundwork for that transition last year when he wrote a note to shareholders declaring that "this is really a new era for our company."

[h=1]Microsoft's reorganization: It's about the products, stupid[/h]
There's a good deal of logic to all that. But logic doesn't build great products. In fact, logic can get in the way of building them. Microsoft used a certain kind of business logic when it designed and built Windows 8, for example. It figured that it could use Windows as a way to jump-start its struggling phone and tablet strategy. The idea was to have Windows 8 have the same interface as Microsoft's phones and tablets. In that way, people would get used to the interface, and then want to buy Microsoft's phones and tablets because they used the same interface.
Things didn't turn out quite that way, for a simple reason: Windows 8 is a kludge, an unsuccessful Rube Goldberg mashup of a traditional operating system and a mobile operating system. It simply isn't a great product, or even a particularly good one.

It will be interesting to see how the Microsoft doomsayers will spin whatever reorg occurs. No matter what, it will blame Ballmer, Metro, and claim it's the end of Microsoft.

[h=1]Microsoft hits the reorg button[/h]
Microsoft officials on Thursday announced details of the latest companywide reorganization, designed to help the company make itself into a leaner, meaner devices and services machine.
First order of business: Steve Ballmer stays on as CEO. There's no change in leadership at the very top. And basically all the other new "winners" in the reorg are already household names at the company.

Indeed. I suspect ms will be unable to effect meaningful change so long a Balmer is at the helm.

It's not resistance to change, it's resistance to idiotic change... a big difference. Metro, on the desktop, is, imho idiotic. And it's hard... very hard, to keep up the fight. It would be much easier to just shut our mouths and accept whatever ms says we must. Our fear, what keeps us going, is that we fear that if we fail, normal desktop computing will be lost forever, and we'll be stuck with the spaghetti known as metro. That is the nightmare scenario.

To read most posts here one would think that a single officer/employee makes all the decisions of a corporation. Microsoft being a rather large corporation at that. Ballmer, although he may have influence, is an employee of the corporation. He has to carry out whatever the Board decides. Who here has the credentials liken to members of the board?

This is a great change that looks to get things down a more determined path. The old way had divisions mis-matched in release times for differing products. Hopefully, we get the benefits of this reorg very soon.

Hi there
Don't you think this is a little reminder about a certain well known Ship on her maiden voyage and what people can do with Deckchairs. !!

Maybe in another context -- things about Horses and Stable doors come to mind also.

Our privacy disappeared with the spread of World Wide Web...

Quote from the referenced blog:

There's nothing necessarily wrong with that data-gathering, as long as people are fully informed about its precise details, know how the data will be stored and used, and opt in to it. But that hasn't always been the case with Google.

Will it be the case with Microsoft? That's hard to say. But it's clear that getting this kind of data will be an important part of the company's strategy in future years.
Data-gathering is a huge business and seemingly, MS intends to play "catch-up" and integrate data-gathering into the operating system. I guess the "Bing-it" thingy didn't work out... Even with digital privacy being pretty much dead, this is a bold move from the company. The quote from Ballmer pretty much sums up Microsoft vision:

We will continue to reinvent the core “shell” of our family of devices and build upon what we have started with Windows 8. We will keep evolving our new modern look, expanding the shell so that it allows people and their devices to capture, store and organize their “stuff” in new ways. Our UI will be deeply personalized, based on the advanced, almost magical, intelligence in our cloud that learns more and more over time about people and the world. Our shell will natively support all of our essential services, and will be great at responding seamlessly to what people ask for, and even anticipating what they need before they ask for it.
The actual extent of the data-gathering remains to be seen, as stated in the Computer World blog. The chances are that the Microsoft vision will be the last nail in the almost dead privacy's coffin...

You might not care about your privacy. Others do. It is a fundamental right and it makes us human. Some of us also care about what it is going to be like for our kids.

Just because other companies are trying unpleasant things, and some people have have fallen for them - does not mean it is ok for others to do it.

It is not hard to understand.
