Skeptics don't get that new-time Windows 8.1 religion

Computerworld - Analysts remain skeptical that Microsoft's relaunch of Windows 8 and the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 will translate into increased PC and tablet sales in the second half of the year.
"[Windows 8.1] is unlikely to have a major impact [on] purchasing decisions made by mainstream consumers," said Sameer Singh, an analyst who writes on the Tech-Thoughts blog, after Microsoft revealed a public preview of the free upgrade June 26 at the company's BUILD developers conference.
"Windows 8.1 should have no impact on the attractiveness of tablets based on the platform," wrote Singh. "While it does offer some improvements, tablet purchases are based on two primary factors: application availability and price."
In neither instance does Windows 8.1 change the dynamics, Singh argued, since smaller Windows tablets will be priced substantially higher than Android-based devices, and the Windows Store, Microsoft's app e-market, continues to lag behind stores backed by rivals Apple and Google.
Instead, Moorhead is banking on the hardware makers, dubbed OEMs for "original equipment manufacturers," to come up with new designs based on new AMD, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm processors. "Think of the irony for a second; hardware helping save software," Moorhead said. "Sad, but true."

Well sure. 8 & 8.1 have failed to seriously challenge Apple and/or Android. All it really has accomplished, is to by and large p*ss off desktops users. imho, of course...

Pricing will be crucial.

MS will have the place and the promotion. We shall see how it works out for them. They might be aiming for 20% or more of the (growing ) tablet market.

Hard to tell if the minor changes will make any difference to laptop type sales. It is possible - perhaps being able to display with a desktop - instead of the repugnant start screen will repel potential buyers less. Maybe.

That is a little detail which MS seems to have overlooked. As long as I can buy superb tablets in the $200 to $300 price range, the MS tablets will have no leg to stand on. And the dismal application situation certainly does not help.

Exactly. I have an Ipad from work and I can't stand it. I would have bought a Surface Pro in a heartbeat as my tablet if it wasn't so overpriced. The Pricing is just off period on Windows tablets. And like has been said before you add the overpricing in with the lack of apps its just not appealing.

I have no interest in ever owning an RT and the Surface Pro is way to expensive for my budget. If I'm going to pay that kind or money for something with those specs its not going to have a 10 inch screen attached to it. For what I'd do on a device that small it doesn't need to be that powerful and that expensive.

There are lots of hybrids out there that will dock and be laptop like or undock and be tablet like. Get one powerful enough and you could likely ditch your desktop PC too. Just be prepared to pay a lot for that functionality. Too pricy for my budget which is why I bought a laptop.

It will be a while before I spend any money on a tablet. I just recently bought an ASUS K75DE and also upgraded it with two SSD's. That's pretty well killed my tech buying budget for a while.

This is very true. Hardware needs to catch up and it hasn't. Until some tablets are on the market with benefits of ULV Haswell and at better price points, people will unfortunately keep buying inferior tablets that are just giant ipods and phones because that's all they know and can afford.

We'll see what happens 6 mo. to a yr after such equipment is available.

Yes but still they are laptop, my personal taste, i prefer a "tablet becoming a desktop"
less weight to bring with me, same horsepower, i like this idea... just a matter of personal choice...

There are hybrids where the keyboard section disconnects leaving just the screen/tablet section. like this for example, Google Image Result for http://www.pclaunches.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/lenovo_ideapad_lynx.jpg
