Whats in store for the next Windows?

One of the great (or maybe not so great) things of being at Microsoft is that every other person wants to ask you why Windows works the way it does. Since I'm part of the Windows update team I get asked even more why does my machnie reboot everytime there is an update and why are there so many updates. So naturally once Windows 7 shipped, my friends, neighbours, relatives, and whoever else you can imagine started asking me So whats next?

Folks started asking me whats in Windows 8 - and the first thing I have to say is that I resonate Steven Sinofsky's interview on who said we're calling it Windows 8? I agree with Steven that till things are baked there is no point floating ideas since it leaves people frustrated when things don't turn out the way they expected. The Windows team promised to deliver a smarter, faster and more user friendly OS with Windows 7 and they delivered just that - the latest quaterly results of Microsoft are a clear indication that Windows 7 has been a success and customers got what Microsoft had promised them! The plan is to use a similar approach for the next version of Windows and till things are finalized you're not going to get a "marketing" name from us:)

So how am I referring to the next version of Windows without saying that many words - well simple - Windows.next:) This is definitely not the official version but a version that is becoming common along my circle. So what are our plans for this next version...

The minimum that folks can take for granted is that the next version will be something completly different from what folks usually expect of Windows - I am simply impressed with the process that Steven has setup to listen to our customers needs and wants and get a team together than can make it happen. To actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next is a process that is surreal! The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs...

Thats about it for this post for the time being - I know I'm not sharing much at this point but right now I can't as we work towards finalizing that vision. Feel free to post your comments on what you think Windows.net should be like!

Welcome to the Next Forum Capt. Jack

Or, welcome to the Windows OS that's coming after 7, Forum. :p

This could be fun....

There was Windows 1, 2 & 3, then NT (codename of "NTOS" which became NT) , 95, 98, 2000, then XP ("XP" is short for "eXPerience", codename Whistler), Vista (codename "Longhorn"), Windows 7 (codename "Vienna" in 2006 and changed to "Windows 7" in 2007), the 'Windows Next' is codename "Windows 8".

What will they do...?
I Don't know!

The marketing department will play a big role.
If you follow the trend: three version numbers, NT - where did that come from?, three named for the current year, two names (they had to make a change after the poor reception of Vista), then Windows 7 (version 6.1).
If Windows 7 remains the big hit it has been so far, then my guess is it will be Windows 8.

Then again, anything could happen in the next couple of years.

It will be interesting to see what they do decide, they never seem to go with the codename the OS is given during development so I suppose that could be a possibility.;)

If Windows 7 remains the big hit it has been so far, then my guess is it will be Windows 8.

I think that is the key. If you think of it, Windows 7, to the general public, "looks a lot like Vista but runs much better". So if they called it Vista 2.0 or something it would make some sense, but it could have been a flop given the bad rep Vista acquired because of the early problems (mostly solved, but I don't think the reputation was never what it could have been).

So, if Windows 7 continues the success it has been, it makes total sense to name Windows.next Windows 8 although, from what they are saying, there could be even a greater difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 than between Vista and 7.

But then again, a lot of water will still pass under that bridge

Ah the good old days :D
A lot of people would probably try and skip over the time WinME was around, although I got on with it quite well and never saw the problems that others had.

I suppose in some ways it was good because it was the step up to XP, is this a pattern emerging, bad WinME good XP, bad Vista good 7, makes you wonder how 8 will fare

I don't know if i'd go that far. ME was bad, XP was good, Vista was just really different. I loved it from the minute I got it, and have never had a problem.
I think the biggest issue with Vista is that it was new and different. XP was around for wayyyyy too long and everyone knew it inside and out, me included. I was sick of it. I am glad I got Vista, and it's never caused any problems for me.

Win 7, don't know, don't have it. The only thing that I think could hurt Win 8 would be if it was a radical change from 7.

I probably used the wrong word saying bad, as far as I was concerned none of them were bad each of them worked very well for me.:)

There was a lot of flack thrown at WinME the same as there was at Vista and people gave them a bad name.

WinME I believe was rushed out as the start of the NTFS for home users and the forerunner to XP and of course didn't really go down very well. Vista came along and of course it was different but got the bad name because it wouldn't work properly on peoples old hardware.

I got a new machine that came with Vista so of course it had the hardware to support it so I had no problems and loved it, but then we get Windows 7 which I think is brilliant and I have in a dual boot on this Vista machine, the only way that I was able to get it though was because Microsoft did the ½ price offer just before the launch, well I got it for under £45, and that's not an offer to turn down, I'd still be using Vista and would have been quite happy if the offer hadn't been made.

According to MS they didn't consider ME a 'version', so is not on their list of OSs.

I didn't have any problems with ME, was good actually.
Like Joan said it was a stepping stone to XP.
Some rumors say Win8 will be a improvement on Win7, so hopefully, we won't see the problems incurred from ME to XP and Vista to Win7.

Very true! 98SE was for "Second Edition", and ME was "Millennium Edition". Why MS chose "Edition" over "Version" ... who knows. But evidently they did not view either SE or ME as new versions of OS to be counted on the "Official" list?

I never got the SE version of 98, mine was the original one, I then went to WinME so I never knew what improvements were incorporated into SE.
