Windows 8 now up to 5.10% market

With the first half of 2013 now over, Windows 8 continues to grow its share steadily but slowly, while Windows XP and Vista decline. In fact, Windows 8 has now passed the 5 percent mark, as well as surpassed the market share of its predecessor’s predecessor, Windows Vista.

Hi there.

These STATS are actually quite meaningless -- as the number of PC's actually in use is a DIMINISHING market and new PC's (what few numbers are actually being sold) are pre-installed with Windows 8 this really doesn't tell us a very great deal.

I mean say we were down to just 300 PC'S on the entire planet and somebody from outer space said "Golly --Windows is on 99% of the PC's" -- it really wouldn't say much would it.

I really suggest to a lot of people on these Forums -- apart from a decent 101 course on statistics try and think BEHIND the RAW figures -- many assumptions are made that are just not valid .

Although A.GUY doesn't actually say it the way the stats are presented would make a lot of readers feel that Windows 8 is finally coming out of the doldrums which it clearly isn't currently -- and that's not entirely due to Windows 8 itself but just the nature of computing which for a lot of people has changed forever and who are now in a "Post PC" world.

Cheers
jimbo

Lol, every post you reply the stats don't mean anything. They mean this is the market share. If it's 10 PCs, then it's still the same percentage of market share. There is nothing to be inferred from it either way, it is what it is. A Guy

It took 1 year after RTM to reach 5%.

At this rate, Windows 8.x won't have 15% of the market when Windows 9.1 rolls out!

Assuming the numbers are correct it would suggest that Windows 8 is a total flop. Nearly a year after release and its only 0.48% ahead of Vista. If I'm an executive at Microsoft I'm looking for someone's head to put on the chopping block.

Actually, if the anecdotal figures of those using third party addons to eliminate metro are taken into account, and subtracted from the totals, 8 metro is being used by perhaps 2.2%.

A very sad and lonely number.

I think it is the executives that is the problem it will be up to the share holders to chop heads and that is unlikely.

I get that you want to defend Microsoft and the garbage called Win8 / 8.1. That's fine because I would fight for what I believe in as well. But please explain to me how "Nearly a year..." equates to a year and a half? I admit I suck at math, but I'm not quite THAT bad.

Wow! Impressive that a tablet centric os,with all the saturation with IOS and Android devices out there, could edge out a desktop only one after a few months.

Can't wait to see Haswell tablets finally getting into the mix.
