Thats because they don't realize that they don't have to close them, average users who use ipads, and smart phones will be right at home. But power users well new concepts are hard for them to grasp.

I don't think we need close button. This is the response from Microsoft tech

Apps go into a suspended mode when you switch to a new app. Here's how it works. When you switch away from an app it is given 5 seconds to perform any cleanup work (like saving settings or its state) and then is suspended. It is still in memory but not receiving any CPU cycles. If the system needs to free resources it will terminate suspended apps to make those resources available.

Let’s say you have 10 suspended apps and your App History is set to 3. If resources are needed, the 7 oldest apps will be evaluated to determine which one is using the most resources. It will be terminated. The only app(s) that are running, rather than suspended or terminated, are the ones you are actively using.

I agree with you, I like the idea of me not closing and let the PC do the job for me, when I leave the metro applications they go to suspend mode and don't use any resources, what's wrong with that? I don't get it.

How hard a concept to grasp is big battery drain?

I dunno, when the apps lose focus, they aren't doing a thing. Ram usage isn't a big deal at all.

I'll approach this in the same way I approach the manner in which Win7 handles memory - I'll let the OS do its job.

It's a paradigm shift. It took me awhile to adjust to it with my Android phone but now it doesn't bother me in the least. Once people get used to the apps being suspended and the OS deciding when to actually terminate the app it won't be a big forum topic anymore.

If it's running on a plugged in PC I don't care if 100,000 apps are running. Everything you use on your phone will drain your battery unless it's closed. If MS can keep apps open and fully suspended on battery devices without comparable drain like every other device ever made, great. I'll believe it when I see it.

It does just that. Suspended without draining any battery power because its not using any of the CPU. If you don't return to the application after a set amount of time it will close completely on its own. Either way, what was released is a Developer Preview, it is pre-beta software for developers to start poking the new APIs and getting a head start on writing new applications. Not a finished product.

So it is kind of an advanced Superfetch scenario.

Are you using 8 on a tablet or a PC? The smaller the screen, the more annoying it is to swipe through a gazillion running apps to find the one you want to use. This is ridiculous. The more stuff you install, the more @#$%! boxes show up on the Metro screen. My phone decides what apps it thinks should be running and what shouldn't, and my dog could make those decisions better than the phone. What if an open app hangs (which has happened on the ones in this dev. preview); what about open apps and privacy - the bad guys are gonna have a field day hunting down MS apps that people don't even know are running; what about giving people a freaking choice to solve a basic problem with a basic solution: Gee, I want to close something. And MS says - I don't think you want to do that.

Forgive me for not trusting anyone who says - Trust me over you for your decisions.

I think you are over analyzing this Colonel Travis. Hung Metro apps will be dealt with he same way standard Windows apps are dealt with. Unresponsive app, Windows notifies you and asks if you want to terminate it. As for the privacy deal, like they cannot already do that. Which they can.
