New Search Ad Experiences within Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 users will eventually start seeing ads along with their usual search results.

As I have shared in my previous posts, over the past year, we have seen significant momentum on Bing Ads. This is exemplified by launching a number of new ad products, driving significantly higher click volume for our advertisers and expanding to a number of additional international markets. A key part of this journey is our pursuit of making search ever more relevant and engaging for consumers as their experiences evolve across new devices and platforms.

Today we are announcing an important step in this journey. The Bing Ads platform will be available in Windows 8.1 Smart Search which was released last week in the Windows 8.1 preview.

With one search, consumers can look for information across the web, device, apps and cloud. With a single tap consumers can play, launch, view or browse. It is a modern search experience to allow consumers to find the information they are looking for quickly and accomplish a broad range of tasks - giving people a faster way to find, discover and do.

Bing Ads will be an integral part of this new Windows 8.1 Smart Search experience. Now, with a single campaign setup, advertisers can connect with consumers across Bing, Yahoo! and the new Windows Search with highly relevant ads for their search queries. In addition, Bing Ads will include web previews of websites and the latest features like site links, location and call extensions, making it easier for consumers to complete tasks and for advertisers to drive qualified leads.

Bing Ads within Windows 8.1 Smart Search allows advertiser campaigns that are already participating on the Yahoo! Bing Network to automatically be eligible to be shown without any additional setup. As we’ve said before, our goal is to make search advertising easier for our customers, while providing the best consumer experience with the most relevant results for the tasks they are looking to accomplish.

We are excited about this next evolution of search and believe it will be more beautiful as well as functional. We will look to continue to innovate with Bing Ads in this new search experience based on consumer and advertiser feedback.

As always, stay tuned for more.

David Pann, General Manager, Microsoft Advertising Search Group

Remember the browser wars looks like deja vu with Google.

Microsoft's not-so-secret plan to vault Bing over Google

All that is important, because it puts Bing beyond the search box, and even beyond the browser. If people get used to doing searches from right within Windows 8.1, there will be no need to head out to Google. They'll do everything right inside the operating system, which means using Bing. And if developers use Bing APIs, it means people will be doing Bing searches from right within apps as well. Again, why go to Google if there's no need to?
In addition, Microsoft has signed a deal with Apple to have Bing power Siri searches on iOS. If things go well, it could lead to Bing powering all iOS searches, and beyond that, potentially all Mac OS X searches. That can help get at one of Microsoft's big problems: mobile search. Because Windows Phone's market share is so small, Bing doesn't currently power many mobile searches compared to Google. But if Bing eventually powers all iOS searches and all Windows Phone searches, Microsoft will suddenly be a serious player in mobile search.

Yep, massive fail. We all know the software won't be cheaper and now we will have to dig past adds and useless web info to find what we are looking for. I'm really not sure would coke snorting marketing executive thought this was a smart play.

I have yet to come to a conclusion on this subject matter as of yet, albeit the idea behind it is very troubling to me. I run an Ad Blocker within my internet browser because I do not care for the in your face crap that is thrown at you by must web sites, and even ones that I have been using for years are blocked. Hopefully someone out there in the wilds of the internet will come up with an Ad Blocker that will work regardless of your OS, and works throughout the OS in blocking ads. Just wish I still had the ability to put together one. . .

I don't mean to offend Microsoft but I don't use Bing. I've been using Google for many years, seems to do the job right. I've even did this one thing where it shows search results but it doesn't tell you which one is Google or Bing and in the end it told me that I preferred Google. Oh well.

I'm not sure but ever since Windows 8, Microsoft just went downhill. So they're trying to fix up Windows 8, and then they announce that there will be ads whenever you use the search feature. If they were just search results, that's fine. But if they're actual ads, then they are shoving them down our throats. They belong in the browser or on an application, not inside a native Windows feature.

Obviously people will complain about this no doubt, especially ever since the increase in privacy issues. Well Microsoft has to learn its lesson somehow.

I guess we will just have to disconnect from the internet when we do a search.

There is an option in PC Settings, Search & Apps, Search, Use Bing To Search Online, "Get search suggestions and web results from Bing" < If you turn that off that should kill the adds.

or MS will change this in final version of windows 8.1.. like they changed that you can not regedit to bring start back to windows 8.

This is the built in search function you access from the charms bar. Microsoft integrated Bing into it so now it also offers up search results from the internet along with what was found on your PC. apparently it serves up adds too. I use Google as my search provider. I was wondering how Microsoft was going to force Bing on us. It always showed up as a recommended update no matter how many times I tried to hide it.

It took me probably 20 minutes to find that setting. I had remembered changing it shortly after installing 8.1 but couldn't remember where it was when I went to make that post. The settings charm is so dependent on what screen your on when you launch it its a PITA some times. I don't use search very often but so far I haven't seen any adds.

Because it's part of the Windows 8 search feature, meaning it's also used to search for your apps on the PC. So when searching for say the control panel, in addition to finding it on the PC, you'll also get some on-line search results....

Win-8 search results.jpg

Anyway this doesn't really come as surprise as I figured this was coming anyway with the Windows 8 live tiles. It's just part of being live all the time, and Microsoft stands to make millions, if not billions in advertisements.

Meh, I'll just ignore the adds by not clicking them. YES, I know there's an option to turn it off.
