Apple unveils new Cylindrical Macbook

Hi there
I'm not sure if the market will really take to a top of the range MacBook with yet even MORE processing power -- OK some people will buy it - like some people will always buy a Ferrari - but I can't see this as being any more than a niche product.

The machine though does look absolutely Stunning -- in my younger days I would have certainly opeted for one.

Can't give you any pics unfortunately but read the article. The reference to the PC is in the article.

Apple unveils music streaming service, revamps iOS - Yahoo! Finance

While this stuff is great I don't think it will save Apple's bacon though. Their radio service also seems a bit pointless -- there's zillions of free stations already -- just use things like Tunein --works on computers, phones, tablets etc and is 100% FREE.

Cheers
jimbo

The new Mac Pro looks like something you should be plugging into a starship power core.

3826882271_80c0116483.jpg

It is a niche product. You can get more power for a lot less $$ if you go with a Windows machine. The entry point for the previous line of Mac Pros is about $3k. I'm sure this will be the same. Artsy people seem to be the market for Mac Pro's.

These computers are beautiful. you get a lot of polish in the hardware design. Light up I/O ports when you spin the case to plug something in and other extra design elements. I have an old G5 Mac and the build quality is amazing. It's like a watch. Tooless latches for takedown, rubber seals on the case side, laser etched disassembly instructions in the side panel, fan unit assemblies that plug in and remove with no tools or exposed wires, 3 separate fan cooling/airflow zones.

Very form over function, but that's apple for you.

It's not terribly designed, very interesting. See, this type of thing if done on the Windows desktop PC side would have save the bacon for at least some OEMs versus recycling generic black ATX boxes for the better part of a decade.

And which is why I build over buy. I think this month is when I'll start construction of my compulator case designed in part by Windows 8's modernist design.

They have never needed the desktop market to be a hugely profitable business. Unsure why that would make any difference now.

Before ios, they pretty did need mac os as a computing platform. They also had itunes that they needed to develop, but again before ios, the marketshare of mac os was greater than it was today. Honestly, they could just get rid of the mac lineup altogether, save those resources and use towards ios.

Streaming radio is nothing new - I was one of the Original LIVE365 Broadcasters, I ran a show once a week for a couple of MP3 sites highlighting bands that had pages on those sites. O did it all through WinAMP using a plugin that allowed me to play songs and speak in a microphone on the fly, from another PC on my Network. I ran it all through a Mixer. WinAMP would crash Big Time cos it never releases any of the Memory it uses, or the Version of WinAMP I used back then didn't.

Back then, Live365 was free, they changed it to a paid service about about 2 years. My friend still broadcasts live, he runs a station 24/7.

So, iTunes Radio, are we locked into using only Apple DRMmed music, or can we use MP3 files as well? This is the one thing I like about iTunes, it used to allow me to convert any Apple file into an MP3. I think that is blocked off now? But there are still programs like Sound Taxi that can convert your whole Apple Library to MP3s - I had to do this for an old Girlfriend who needed 3 hours of Music for a therapy thing she was doing, all of her songs were AACs. I was able to convert all of them to MP3.

I'll have to look into this, like how does it work, can I BROADCAST an iTunes Radio station? I'll have to look into the article with more scrutiny.

Honestly, they could just get rid of the mac lineup altogether, save those resources and use towards ios.

As I recall, iTunes was Mac's Answer to Windows Media Player. Little did we know they would develop it to handle almost all of iOS.

They started with iPods - Only iTunes was able to populate an iPod with Music. This is no longer the case, there are 3rd party WMP plugins - I have one - that allow you to plug an iPod into a PC and via WMP you can move your playlists and MP3s over to the iPod and it all shows up in the Music Player.

As iPods changed from strict Music players to devices that can do many more things, they then created the iPhone, which used iTunes to populate the iPhone with apps and Music.

This is their whole Market now - Although Apple never had a greater Market Share for their Computing Platforms, they had a dedicated User Base, so MACOS being attached to Mac Only Computers mostly could not be compared to Windows, as Windows can be installed to all manner of Computers, even Macs now.

Apple has always maintained that their OSs and Control systems are part of the actual Device or Computer. This is why they are so stingy with it, Apple doesn't WANT to allow MACOS to run on a PC machine. Many people don't agree so they develop Hackintosh and OSx32- But Apple does not sanction it. There was a company that sold PCs loaded with MACOS, Apple ran them out of Bidness.

But one thing Apple did not do was to completely Alienate PC users from Mac Devices - Ergo, they develop iTunes for those platforms. I wish they would have kept developing Safari for Windows, but they stopped, and the last version, 5.1.7, is not very good for Windows 7 and 8.

2006 OSX 5.39% marketshare
2012 OSX 7.13% marketshare
(these numbers are a from a few minutes of searching the intertubes. If you find them to be off, please post what you find.)

It's been known for a long time that the success of iOS has created more Mac adoption. The halo effect I think it is called.

Get rid of the mac lineup? Why? Is it hurting them? Are they struggling with resources right now? I would bet that every department has every resource they need and they are not trying to figure out how to make things work. They are working, making products and I don't hear any excuses from them on how things aren't working because of resources. 3rd party negotiations are the only thing that seems to hinder product development (record companies, movie companies etc).

So again, why dump the Mac line?

I know a guy I argue Mac vs. PC all the time with. He says the same thing. Apple should get out of the hardware business. Why do you guys do that? What is it about the Mac hardware that keeps you guys attacking it? People seem to love MacBooks and other Mac hardware, but you suggest they should get out of it.

APPLE guys say this? But Apple Hardware is not really "Apple" Hardware - It's Hardware that is common to a lot of computers, even PCs - Apple simply removes any Visual identification from the actual components. This does not prevent you from installing a program to poll the hardware directly, as each Chip in the Chipset, and each GPS Module, each Camera, each Light Sensor and even Optical drive or Hard Drive can be identified using AIDA64 or other Hardware Monitoring Program- And you don't even need to install a Boot Camp partition to do it, you can use Hiren's Boot CD and there are programs on there that will identify every piece of hardware on a Mac.

Apple uses the same stuff Dell and HP use - the difference is in their BIOS system. I don't think Apple should stop making Macbooks and Titanium Towers, no Way!

It's a PC guy that pokes at all things Apple that has said to me several times that Apple should get out of the hardware business and just make OS X and have it installable on all hardware.
