Windows 8 Finally Overtakes Vista, No Longer a Microsoft..

[h=1]“Disaster”[/h]
Windows 8 has often been described as a new disaster for Redmond-based software giant Microsoft, especially because it reportedly recorded sales that were similar to the ones posted by Vista after launch.

And still, things are getting significantly better for Microsoft and Windows 8. According to figures provided by market researcher StatCounter, Windows 8 is currently the fourth most popular operating system in the world and the third when it comes to Windows versions exclusively.

At this point, Windows 8 is installed on 5.75 percent of computers worldwide, while Windows Vista has a market share of 5.44 percent.

Windows 8 Finally Overtakes Vista, No Longer a Microsoft ?Disaster?

so when W8 is as popular as vista, we call it a success?

the bar indeed is low...

I think you will find the adoption rate is still lower than Vista's was.

That should not be a surprise. Many of us saw it coming.

Will the new os ( 8.1 ) make any difference?

Hard to tell.

A better postitioned tablet offering at much lower prices may do ok - but it was always a tablet os.

Hi there
Why is it that certain individuals just NEVER have anything positive to say about W8 -- OK It DOES have flaws and Ms seems to be slowly coming round to fixing the problems

But surely on a W8 Forum just posting the same old diatribes "ad Nauseam" doesn't help anybody. It appears also that the same individuals don't seem to have recognized that for a LOT of people both in the Work place and at Home the whole Nature of computing and the use of what could be called "computing" devices has changed considerably -- no longer can we assume that most people who need to be online will either want or use a standard computer any more so any sort of Stats on the number of licenses or installations of a particular OS compared with another one in the past when the ONLY choice was using a PC (or Mac) is totally meaningless and largely irrelevant to the success or otherwise of an OS which isn't geared only to running on a "Classical PC".

Some people - especially if they were the reasonably well paid I.T Gurus of recent years will of course bemoan the evolution of computing infrastructure (as well as their own status and importance to their organisations) -- these sort of changes are always hard for people used to what was at one time a very profitable and secure profession.

Things have changed a lot -- and while a lot of work will (and continue to be) done on desktop type of machines - this is no longer a growth area.

What Ms are trying to do is to join the new computing areas (both hardware and software wise) into some sort of common structure -- and of course they won't get it right first (or even second or third go).

However CONSTRUCTIVE criticism always works best and actually provided one is prepared to put up with a certain amount of hassle in the initial set up of W8 it isn't that too bad an OS. --Now whether you SHOULD have to put up with the set up / post install hassle is a legitimate question and it's here that proper complaints etc can be directed to Ms who aren't in any way as idiotic as a lot of posters on this Forum seem to think they are.

I would suggest now instead of mouthing the same boring stuff over and over again we wait and see what Windows 8.1 offers and until then try and assist other users in getting the best use out of W8 as it currently exists.

If people still really HATE it then there are plenty of other alternatives to use.

Cheers

Statcounter and netmarketshare and the rest might as well pack up shop. They are wasting their time.

Those who are funding them are wasting their money.

Jimbo says so - it must be true.

If you read my post, I am pointing to a very large alleged change in the space of 9 days.

The article claims :

things are getting significantly better for Microsoft and Windows 8.

Those with IQs in double digits ( or higher ) are questioning if that is the case.

I already saw this coming...

No one seems to care to put ANYTHING in perspective. Windows 8 IS NOWHERE NEAR close to vista in terms of everything from UX to UI. Windows 8 was a much greater change to Windows that hasn't been seen in over 15 years. Considering it took about 8 months to surpass vista says that for one thing, whatever Microsoft is doing is being slowly adopted versus being dropped like a rock as some thoroughly believe. And two, Windows 8 isn't doomed whatsoever. There is no doom and gloom, sorry depressing people, but that's just that.

Windows 8.1 will just continue on the things Microsoft didn't put into Windows 8 from the start. I watched the whole Microsoft keynote at Computex last night and some features of Windows 8.1 are LITERALLY just things that were in development a couple years ago for 8 that was kicked down the road so Windows 8 can reach its RTM deadline. Things like ReFS, and TOTAL app and Start screen syncing between PCs, yeah that was supposed to be in Windows 8 but didn't make the deadline. There was another feature, but I imagine that's purely for Windows RT (maybe a customized Windows 8 install) where the Desktop was to be considered a service of Windows, much like networking services. It was said by Steve Sinofsky that the user can decided to even HAVE a piece of Desktop code to be installed.

As time continues though, all this work is going to pay off, slowly but surely it will.

whatever Microsoft is doing is being slowly adopted

You say that as if people are choosing to do so. It is inevitable. For those who need to replace their pc/laptop, there is only windows ( except for the very few who can afford a Mac ).

Even Ed Bott says it is just those who have to replace that are getting 8.

You can come up with a whole bunch of reasons/excuses as to why people are not buying it unless they have to.

However, it is wildly inaccurate to imply people are willingly choosing/adopting it in any kind of numbers.

What! They've taken Vista out?
To be honest: I still have that running on a laptop.

I'm not surprised that Windows 8 is overtaking VISTA. When Ihad Vista, the longer I used it the more I disliked it. With 8 the more I useit, the better I like it. I think that Vista was just a poor OS. I believe thatas people use 8 they will start to like it. Win 8.1 will certainly help.
