Microsoft: 80 Percent of Windows 8 Users Will Have Touch..

It’s no surprise that Microsoft promotes Windows 8 as an operating system that’s built for the touch, so the company is back with some new optimistic forecasts.

Speaking at Computex in a Future of Touch Panel keynote, Microsoft's GM of OEM engineering Christian Cocks explained that Windows 8 would most likely take off in the touchscreen sector, as most of its features are specifically aimed at this type of devices.

"Today, if you look at touch penetration across major markets, it's probably somewhere in the low teens. But over time, in the next couple of months, we see [touch] penetration rates sky rocketing across the world by this holiday," Cocks said according to The Inquirer.
Microsoft: 80 Percent of Windows 8 Users Will Have Touchscreens

I don't think so.

There will be a whole bunch of oem machines coming out with touch. MS is making sure of that by making the oems offers they can't refuse.

Whether 80% of people will actually use touch is a different matter. It is not suitable for a vertical screen - a proper pc in other words.

When I can buy a touch screen for the same price as I can a regular LCD, then I will think about it.

$144 for an Acer 22" LCD (Amazon)
$320 for an Acer 23" touch (newegg)

For the price of one monitor I can buy two. I just don't see the value I guess as I run a dual set up so the out of pocket going touch is way out there...

At least insofar as using windows via touch. I have two touch devices, both with the latest Android os.... just don't see that changing. imho, of course...

Oh it WILL be refused, that can be promised.

If MS develops a TS KEYBOARD - THAT wold be the ONLY way "80% of all windows users in the world" would even consider it. So, why haven't they developed these?

What they would need is a surface - Not necessarily a screen, that rests where the Mouse rests. the surface is synched to your System, so when you touch it, it also hits the appropriate tile you are aiming for You would have to be able to "aim" it, so they COULD make these as Small Extensions of the Monitor, iPad-Sized? so when you touch a tile on the screen or surface, it is touched on the screen.

Don't know what they are gonna do about Keyboards, though - Ya still gotta use THOSE. Tough Luck, M$

Ya know, thinking of this - Why NOT make a Mouse/Keyboard system that is on a Tablet? It would satisfy this penchant of M$'s to have nice shiny baubles and huge coloured squares. Just Put the OSK on a Keyboard Sized Tablet which could be used via BT or IR, or maybe even WiFi. Put a Graphic MOUSE on a smaller PADD, that you could attach on either the left of right side of the OSK-Padd.

Eh? Eh? Lets figure out how to make one.

I have no interest in, or use for touch. As long as it can be disabled in favour of the superior mouse/keyboard (a full 101-keyboard, not those emasculated onscreen disasters) combo, fine.

But the day there's no choice to not use touch, is the day I go somewhere else.

if I was spending extra money on the screen, it would be for size and resolution, not touch.

Exactly. Things that matter, not gimmicks.

I don't know if adding touch capability will make everyone rush out and buy a pc.

They use tablets/phones for that kind of content consumption stuff.

Unless they are turning all those machines into tablets, which just happen to have keyboard attached ( or maybe removable ).

80 percent...OVER TIME.

More and more OEMs are making laptops that touch options. There was one I was oogling at by Toshiba that has a VERY high resolution touchscreen.
New Windows 8 Ultrabook from Fujitsu has 3200x1800 display - Neowin

It is also red, I was about to go to Japan and buy it. :geek:

As more touchscreens are put into PCs, the lower the prices will be. Simple economics.

Now for ERGONOMICS, again, if you're using a touchscreen vertically on a desktop, you sir are doing it COMPLETELY wrong. Very wrong.

I just want to see a REAL nice 23 or 27 inch touchscreen monitor, pressure sensitive, IPS panel, very small edge bezel, tilts down like an artist drawing easel (or Bing/google Wacon touchscreen for more details), at least 1080p or higher resolution, and maybe ideally a very good tri-microphone array. So far, I THINK LG might have that kind of monitor that they showed off back at CES but they haven't released such yet.

Exactly.

You need a vertical (or nearly so) screen on a desktop or you are 'doing it wrong'.

So touch is an unnecessary gimmick that prevents the machine from being used to its full potential.

And don't get me started on those useless truncated onscreen 'keyboards'.

No, thanks. I'll pass.

So I'm guessing every artist, designer, sketcher, etc. uses a vertically oriented canvas?

Explain to me the logic of the statement, "So touch is an unnecessary gimmick that prevents the machine from being used to its full potential."

I can type an essay on my Windows Phone using nothing but the onscreen keyboard.

we'll be on windows 11

At least, and 8 will long dead, buried, and best forgotten.

Though it may be remembered for completely changing the industry and the relative positions of the os/device companies.

The aftermath of 8 will go on for a while. Hard to say how it will all turn out. It is just possible the result could be much more openness, choice, and a much better situation for the users. Sadly, that is much more likely if 8.1 is a flop.
