Microsoft and its OEMs stick to an outdated tablet strateg

When it comes to tablets, Microsoft and its OEMs don't know where they're going, an analyst said today. "There's still the idea that they don't quite get it," said Carolina Milanesi of Gartner in an interview. "And I don't think the vendors get it either."
Milanesi was reacting to the debut Monday of a pair of Windows devices, including one of the first 8-in. tablets to run Microsoft's newest operating system, and an offbeat hybrid that runs both Windows 8 and Android.

No, the latest announcements by ASUS and Acer CLEARLY state they don't get it with Windows tablet PCs.

Seriously, who the hell would want android on a touch AIO PC, or android WITH Windows 8 on a touch AIO PC, or android and Windows 8 on the same tablet? That's called BlueStacks by the way, to relieve the awkwardness of such OS shifts. Or even better yet, how is one supposed to use the Desktop on an 8 inch screen? 10.6 inches is one thing, that's just the smallest it should go and has ever gone down to (netbooks in particular) but 8?

And even more odd, is when I read about Acer's 8 inch tablet PC, with an INTEL processor, everyone in the comments section is gushing about how they're buying it. Yes, it's 380 dollars, but in all honesty, that's Windows RT territory.

But windows rt doesn't have a territory if no one wants it.

windows RT is tablet/phone consumer oriented OS. but it lacks applications (you cant run windows 8 software there) that makes ios and android so good..

I was searching windows store to replace my android apps that I use daily and no luck (anyone know good Japanese-English dictionary for windows phone/RT?).. I will stick with android for mobile consumption need and windows 7/8 (desktop mode) for work.

If it's too expensive, which my point elsewhere applies here, OEMs and Microsoft were foolish in thinking they could charge 500+ dollars for a Windows RT tablet that is and will be compared to an ipad or android phablet but doesn't have the app development of either platform. Especially worse is the fact that Intel based tablet PCs are usually 1-300 dollars more on average than Windows RT ARM based tablets, so there isn't a good cost argument. If RT tablets were 2-300 dollars, x86 ones were 5-600, it would make a better argument.

Do you remember the poll I did? 11 months ago.

MS will have nothing sub 300.

And that is where the action will be.

I doubt the sub 300 level is where it's at.

I don't think the oems had much choice due to the exorbitant license fees.

Will be different from now on.

Yes, but these tablets have a lot of customized parts, which are not being mass produced yet. Right now, the RT devices have hit rock bottom. Some retailers are taking a loss for selling them.
