Ballmer at work on Microsoft restructuring, report says

Microsoft, a software giant since the dawn of the PC era, might not be so focused on software much longer.

CEO Steve Ballmer is in the process of managing a "major restructuring" that would shift his company's center of balance, All Things Digital's Kara Swisher is reporting on Monday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of Microsoft's plans. Rather than base its business on software, as it has since its inception, Microsoft would transition to a "devices and services company," Swisher's sources say.

Ballmer might have already laid the groundwork for that transition last year when he wrote a note to shareholders declaring that "this is really a new era for our company." He pointed out in that letter that Microsoft would increasingly focus on devices and services.

Steve Ballmer is probably not the right person for this job. Microsoft is very large company in a Monopoly position with their software business.

Steve's aim is compete in a highly competitive area of Services and Devices against companies that are very good at it Two of those companies Apple and Google are also very large with huge financial resources and unlikely at all to be intimidated by Microsoft. If anything it will just cause them to lift their game.

Apple and Google already have large customer bases that cover most of mobile/tablet area that Microsoft is aiming for. Microsoft will struggle against Google on price because Googles advertising empire is where it makes it's money. Microsoft has already tried competing there and failed. Microsoft is just not a cool enough brand to compete against Apple and attract many of their customers

Microsoft has two advantages in their favour. One is their Windows back catalog of Desktop software, including Office. The other is, their huge Windows and Office customer base. Microsoft needs to get those people to follow and be on board with these
Services and Devices.

The problem with that is that the need for Windows applications and Office on Tablets and Phones is that is a niche market, how large a niche, time will tell. A lot of phone and tablet owners seem to be happy with their app stores. They certainly aren't queuing up to buy Win 8 tablets.

With their customers Microsoft is trying to Bulldoze them to where they want. So far it is not working. The adoption rate for Windows 8 is far lower then their previously most derided version, Vista. A large portion of the enthusiast community dislike the Metro interface and what Microsoft is trying to do to the Desktop. These are the people who are advising their non tech friends, who come to them for advice, to avoid it.

Microsoft is trying to move into an area where they are the underdog. To compete successfully, they need the loyalty of their current customers and try to convince them to follow. Instead of forcing by removing choices they need to win "hearts and minds".

Microsoft is not going any where soon, but Steve seems to be trying really hard at turning a large company into a mid-sized one.

Seems like SOMEONE needs to have a word with Steve....

I'd like to see Paul Allen come back, at least in an advisory capacity.

MS needs a creative and technical visionary, and Paul seems to have that gift. It is clear that committees are NOT good in those areas. LOL

Never going to happen.

Both Bill Gates and Paul Allen are either pursuing or giving their time or donating to charities to prevent simple diseases that kill people every single day in neglected parts of the world; and in Allen's case donating money to help find a cure of cancer that he was stricken with. He also actually will release a music album soon...

For some reason, the phrase "Steve Ballmer to do major restructuring at Microsoft" seems a tad frightening...

But it might be that he will make the Windows Phone to be under the Windows division and not the Xbox/Entertainment division, etc.
