Windows 8: New "Protogon" filesystem could be the next big thing

  1. #11

However, I think getting hold of a few files from the 7955 build should do the trick, lemme see...
It would be an interesting thing to try.

Let us know if you get something

I'm going to give this a miss and stick with NTFS, as it is well-proven. Since messing around with Protogon, even though it was on separate drives to those containing my OSes, some apps that were working in WDP are no longer working, amongst them being Piano and Labyrinth. As such, I cannot recommend this file system. The principle might be good, but I think it requires more in-house testing and evaluation before the option of using it is included in a publically released OS.

Can you tell us exactly how you went about it because at least with the WDP files, the filesystem is seen as RAW and the drive is not usable even after format with protogon completed. The disk properties do not show the filesystem as protogon (its a blank). I'm going to try later today with 7955 files and a 2 gig non-OS partition but it would be interesting to know how it can be done natively in WDP.

Edit: no go with the 7955 files either, looked like the darned driver is broken in WDP.

I first formatted a blank internal HDD to NTFS in Disk Management and assigned it as E. I then opened an elevated command prompt and entered the command format e: /fs:protogon. After prompting for the volume name, and having input this, the command seemed to work and it appeared as though the disk was being formatted. However, at the end of the process where you are asked to input a volume label, the format failed (this happened whether a label was entered or not), and Disk Management showed the drive as RAW.

I also tried with a 2GB flash drive and got the same result. A 512MB device was reported as being too small.

I'll try an alternative way and report back, but, as I've stated above, I don't think this feature is ready for release yet. Or, perhaps it is, but as Steve Sinofsky has stated "...most of the stuff in Windows 8 is disabled right now...", and it could well be that once MS decide to fully enable it that it will work as it should. I would expect that to happen with the Beta release (WDP is still pre-Beta).

I tried the alternative way, through Disk Part, and the operation, whilst appearing to go through, failed at the end leaving the disk as RAW.

It'll not work in WDP, no matter what. Because the filesystem driver is missing.

Is the Protogon filesystem not going to happen?
ProtogonFS was found in some early builds of Windows 8 and was found to handle disk operations better than NTFS. But since we're now at Developer stage, is the new file system not going to come around, again? My assumption is that it won't probably because Microsoft realized that people have...
