Hi there
Will the W2012 Server get the 8.1 type of update --anybody know. There seems to be a deafening silence on W2012 server which IMO is strange as it is STREETS ahead of the really horrible W2008 server.

W2012 server has options though already to avoid the whole metro stuff but it would be nice to add some of the proposed customisation features to it.

I'm also not hearing anything about whether W8 ENTERPRISE will also be upgraded -- IMO this is MORE important even than the HOME versions if Ms wants businesses to adopt W8. Boot to the standard desktop is really a MUST for businesses - by also pinning standard programs to the quick launch task bar and / or the desktop a lot of problems of User training can be avoided.

Cheers

I am wondering this myself. Also, how will future support work for users who do not upgrade to 8.1? Nothing in 8.1 looks to have much of an effect on someone who uses a SMR and the desktop exclusively. Should I bother upgrading and risk having some type of issue with my work PC?
I recently rolled out a 6 PC trial with Windows 8 and Start8 (Start8 with GPO), and am really concerned 8.1 could break something with GPO or Start 8. Ugg, MS.

What is horrible about server 2008? We use a lot of 2008R2 and is been very solid.

Hi there
Might not bother a lot of people - but W2008 Server has had issues with a) SOUND -- almost no way to get any VM's that W2008 server supplies to have any SOUND on them -- not bothered about SOUND on the server itself but on VM's running on 2008 server.

b) USB support also HORRIBLE on W2008 server -- again might not be important itself on a server but it's needed on some VM's that are running on W2008 server,

Windows 2012 Server addresses these issues just fine.

Cheers

The VM sound issue is probably more an issue with the virtualization software (I've never seen sound on a VMware Workstation VM running Windows Server 2008 R2, for example, but I also have not ever really had a need for sound on one.)

Windows Server 2008 R2 is really very solid in my experience and I've never run into any USB issues. Nonetheless, I like what I have seen and read of Windows Server 2012. A "Windows 8.1"-type upgrade might bring a little more to the table but 8.1 looks to be more consumer-oriented. We'll have to see if there's any sort of annoucement or an upgrade for Windows Server 2012.

Hi there.

Sound is required in instances where you are running a load of VM's from your 2012 server and people want to do things like edit music / video on the VM using legacy studio type hardware that only works on XP for example. If the Host system (W2008 server) doesn't recognize any sound then your VM won't have it either.

W2008 server probably is fine if you are just providing VM's that run stuff like bog standard Office 2010 etc or legacy payroll / HR / AP / AR type systems.

W2012 server operates just fine as a host -- and you don't have to enable the "Kiddy Metro" interface either -- you get 3 levels of interface (Basic --i.e command mode only --although it's a greatly enhanced power shell CLI, Basic desktop and the full desktop experience).

No word on this yet, but I kind of doubt it for a few reasons, one being that it would intimidate IT people who manage Windows based servers. Having to update the Windows clients yearly is one thing, but having to update a whole server (and/or several) every year is another.

Plus, what would they called it? Windows Server 2012.1? Windows Server 2012 R2?

Yes, Windows 2012 R2. Personally I have enjoyed using Window 2012 with exception of that metro crap but IT isn't known for updating servers with each release. I have a ton of windows 2008 which was built on the Vista kernel, 2008R2 built on the 7 kernel and we won't be upgrading those but for new servers, sure we might be going to move to the latest version. Well, got a massive VM upgrade first...

I kind of figured Microsoft wasn't going to make 2012 R2 for that exact reason.

But I wonder how many servers are running 2012 as it is, because if it isn't that much then Microsoft can freely do a yearly update like that since usage isn't like 2008 or 2008 R2 for example.

The new Servers will be Server 2012 R2. And this is going to be a paid release. (you won't get it free). Unless, you have software assurance.

Microsoft is moving to a quick, once a year release schedule for these server products and they won't be free ugprades. Instead, they want you on software assurance, and want you to need software assurance to keep up on their product releases and this gives them steady recurring revenue flow.

That seems like it would be awfully tedious on the management side of things with keeping servers up to date every year.

Yes, it would be tedious and we wouldn't keep up with each release. But as it stands now, with Server 2003 being so old and server 2008 being old, software assurance wasn't all that valuable to people with 5 years between releases. And Microsoft lost out on software assurance revenue because people didn't see the value. So now, they want to release new versions every year and make them paid for versions unless you have software assurance. Thus, companies see value in software assurance and Microsoft sees recurring revenue.
