Windows 8.1 Full Features List

As you have probably heard by now, Microsoft has decided to confirm this week that it's working on a new operating system called Windows 8.1, while also revealing lots of details about it.

The purpose of this article is pretty simple: to present all the changes that Microsoft plans to bring with its next Windows release, along with a few details to help you figure out the purpose of each of them.
Windows 8.1 Full Features List

Hi there
You forgot to mention TWO of the most important (that what comes of using Softpedia for your source rather than more informed sites).

1) Metro apps can be used on any monitor in a multi monitor setup TOGETHER with desktop application (and 4 metro apps will be allowed -- re-sizeable too).

2) Install classic desktop apps will create a SINGLE "grouped" tile where the user can then re-arrange at will. Currently a large windows install (such as Visual Studio - the full version) generates tiles all over the place for every single .exe file.

There are other improvements as well - but these two I think will interest a lot of users. Boot to desktop of course has been confirmed anyway for a long time now.

Cheers

So it's definite then. Start button but no start menu.

Question is will the start button bork 3rd party apps such as StartIsBack, etc. If this happens I'll just stick with W8 Pro OEM as is with StartIsBack, as I have no use whatsoever for Modern Start Menu ... which makes the version 8.1 Start button less than useless ... it becomes a hindrance!

Well if the Start Button is just a short cut to the Start Menu then that doesn't clarify as a Start Button at all. Why don't they just put the short cut on the desktop. That seems kind a worthless to me. Guess I'll keep my 3rd party app and hope they find a way to get around MS short cut.

There they go again thinking they know what the customer wants. What ever happen to the slogan "Customer is King"?

It was about time. Looks like our cnstant complainings flooding the forums has been fruitfull.
They are able to listen, but it takes time.
This is the most important news because it shows that MS is still able to adapt to users' needs.
The fake start button, however is a bad joke. The Modern Start screen looks more and more like a second desktop. basicaly, we get an OS with two desktops. That's ridiculous, but ok. At some point we better stop trying to search a rationale behind their design.

Nowadays, the word applies to those in a position of monopoly power. Firms having 25% or more of the market come under the auspices of the Monopolies commission ( now the Monopolies and Mergers commission - as they also look at mergers which may result in a monopoly ).

Monopolies are characterized by a lack of competition and a lack of viable substitute products.

MS is not a monopoly.

Why the crap aren't they changing the Desktop iconography?! Seriously, it's odd to have a modern Start Screen so flat, crisp, and clean to have tiles with 3D perspectives and lighting effects adjacent to modern Office app icons. Wow.

One would think that after almost THREE plus years of Windows 8 development, iconography might be something to consider to update when it is obviously known that the Desktop UI is the most used portion of Windows 8 currently.

May be true (probably is), but it's not relevant; all the $$ come from the customer.

Sure, in the Consumer market (Tablet/Phone market).

It effectively is in the Enterprise market.

Maybe you get to dictate to your employer, but most workers have no say over:
  • The brand of PC
  • The OS
  • The software

If my laptop stops running Windows, it won't be to switch to Android.

No, it'll be one of the less cloud-oriented versions of Linux. So far I've been quite impressed with Mint Cinnamon, although it's only in a VM and I haven't done too much 'serious' stuff with it at this stage.

Quite seriously, the only 'improvement' in 8.1 that got my interest was the small tiles. The rest is mainly irrelevant flufff I'd bypass/work around or ignore. Some, like the stuffing-up of File Explorer with the inclusion of Skydrive, but demotion or removal of Libraries are totally unwanted. That's one I'd definitely want a 3rd-party fix for.

I've no desire to spend all that time working-around and fixing the same issues and more in 8.1 as I did with 8, when it appears that there have been no improvements on the desktop side at all, but rather more depreciation and demotion.

No, I'm happy now with 8 the way I have it. 8.1 appears to offer me very little, if any, reason to bother with it at this time and their continuing disregard for traditional users really is becoming a bit too much. Now, unlike some, I don't come onto the forum and bag 8 for no reason, and I'm not going to start now with 8.1. A bit of consideration for the desktop users (and no, we're not going to go away) and I'd be doing the 'Hokie Cokie' (sorry, CR), but at this stage, no. Sorry.

At this stage, I'll stick with my W8 Pro w/Media Centre.

Wenda.

I have found that some businesses have the attitude of there is a right way, a wrong way, & THEIR way.

I think Microsoft will do things their way regardless of better ways.

When it hits them in loss of income they may do better.& only then. :(

Just my opinion.Time will tell.

In the meantime I'll keep Win 8 Pro & Classic Shell.

As a customer service veteran (50 yrs) I think you have a bad outlook on your customers.
  1. 100% of them each pay a small part of your salary.
  2. 80% of them are demoralized instead of being thanked by you.

If that is how you describe your customers, how do you think they describe your attitude as they are leaving the store?
