Here's how the new Windows Blue Start Button may work

After reading the article I sure hope it works the way it says, it means that M$ will shoot there other foot off then the OEMs may get drivers for other OS and really give us a choice of OS not just M$ junk. Hello Mint.

It wouldn't surprise me if that is what MS planning.

Be interesting to see how users react to that kind of ambush.

MS might be lining themselves up for a kicking.

If microsoft does indeed show that kind of utter contempt towards it's users, it had better be prepared for a backlash even greater than that shown for 8. At least 8 could claim to be an honest mistake. 8.1 will not enjoy such luxury, and 8 will be referred to as, the good old days by comparison....

Boot-straight-to-desktop is in the Windows Blue Milestone Preview builds, too, my source confirmed. And it supposedly works just like it sounds: Users can opt to see the Desktop, and not the Metro-Style Start Screen when their PCs/tablets start up. Clicking the Start Button in this view takes users to the Metro Style Start Screen, even though users start on the desktop.

Wow... talk about spurious reasoning.... tell me that they cannot really be that dense....

It seems no matter what MS does it won't make some people happy. I can somewhat understand why some don't like the "billboard" Start Screen, but I think that this is a good compromise if true.

Those who want to boot straight to the desktop will have an option to do so without third party software. You'll be able to do away with the "billboard" Start Screen and use All Apps which is actually the new Start Menu anyway.

The bottom line, and I am speaking for myself only, I want nothing to do whatsoever with the metro environment, and all that it stands for. Nothing. Zero. Ziltch. Zip. Sweet Bugger All.

I will never at any time, use a metro app. I find everything metro to be a complete waste of time.

It sounds to me like they are trying to take us all for fool, in effect, putting lipstick on a pig.

Big mistake.

So please, lets make it clear. No sleight of hand trying to lure us into something we have rejected is going to fool us.

Haha, some people on here are funny.

I'll share something with you guys that I rarely share with people. I came from a very poor area of a very poor country. We barely had anything to eat, let alone the opportunity for education and technology. When I was little, sometimes we were told to continue sleeping because there ain't anything to eat that day.

Didn't get my first computer until I was 20. And even then, it was someone else's throw-away.

Nowadays, we're all engineers and all our kids have the bests of everything. Looking back and comparing to what we had then and what people are whining about nowadays, it's incredible how incredibly hard it is for some people to adapt. Here we are still whining about the start button. Nevermind all the new functionalities of 8. I used to have a third party app to mount the ISO's I had on my hard drive. The first thing I did when I first had windows 8 was install the magicdisc app because I didn't know this was a built in function of 8. Nevermind that the boot time is incredibly faster than anything else out there. Even iOS and android take at least twice as long to boot 8. Nevermind everything else that's good about 8. All people whine about is the damn start button.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
My God, if it's not Windows 7, it it's apparently an uprising by Microsoft to destroy their user base, huh?

Good grief. What ever happened to if you don't like it, don't use it and don't bother the people that do?

Anyways, interesting changes. Curious to see how app switching will work from the Desktop to a metro app as well as app snap. Part of the reason why there was no actual Start button on the Taskbar is because it will shift from the left side of the screen over to the middle portion assumedly in 8.1 with 50/50 mode. Apparently it will actually allow Desktop wallpapers to be used as Start Screen background, VERY glad about that!

But seriously, what I'm still not understanding is this. Part of the reason of the manufactured upset with no start menu in Windows 8 is because of the loss of the links that were on the menu, as well as certain other things. You can't by default go to Computer from the Start Screen, nor your Pictures, Documents Libraries, or Downloads, ect. VERY damn easy solution: pin them by default to Start. Simple as that. Boot up Windows 8, you will see those locations instead as text on a menu, but an icon.

It seems that there are 3 groups when it comes to Windows 8.
Group 1: Those who like it
Group 2: Those who don't like it but could change if MSmakes the changes that they want.
Group 3: Those who hate it, always have hated it andregardless of what happens; always will hate it.
I hope that the changes in 8.1 will helpful those in group2. It's doubtful that it will change anything for group 3. But you never know,it might. For those who hate 8 because they like 7 so much more. There's nothing wrong withthat since 7 is certainly a good OS.

See, that's the thing, Microsoft has said it may bring back the Start Button, but I haven't seen anything that even hints at them ever bringing back the classic Start Menu. I've seen a lot of users asking for it but at best all Microsoft talks about is a Start Button. It appears to me that it will end up being a button that does what the Windows key on your keyboard does now and not much more.

Let me see if I have this right.

MS excuse for removing start menu:

Taskbar pinning and desktop icons mean users go to start menu (all programs ) less often.

[Conveniently forgetting all the other functions ergonomically grouped sensibly in one neat place at bottom left.]

Now they replace the whole useful menu with - yes you've guessed it - the very thing they say users aren't going to very much.

Even better, take all the files out of the well arranged All Programs folders ( which we hardly ever use ) and throw them into one big folder that covers the entire screen.

Sheer genius

start menu isn't ergonomic when you have to move the mouse pointer around from either the top at the MFU list after moving it all the way down. Or, hitting the Start button, up to hit All Programs, move it up again to program on the top of the list, or scroll down to find a program folder.

A tedious task.

But then again, let's just complain about things to complain about.

Start button got pretty useless for me long time ago. Once I got hundred or more programs installed finding a particular one fast was mission impossible so I always grouped programs in folders on the desktop, clearly marked and sorted by thematic.Only throwback was that I had to go to desktop to reach them. Now, on W8, I sort them on the Metro screen and they are reachable with one click. Having 2 monitors helped a lot. Now if only Metro tiles for non-metro apps would contain whole icon and be smaller so all the apps would be contained on only one or two screens so I don't have to turn mouse wheel like crazy.

Welcome to EightForums, CountMike. :)

This kind of stuff is what MS was seeing in their data on users. That's only one of the reasons why the Start Menu was changed to Start Screen.

You may want to consider using Page Up and Page Down keys instead of scroll wheel. You can then further "fine tune" with any of the arrow keys to select, then push Enter. But then again I'm big on keyboard whereas you may not be.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, its so much easier to hunt for the hot corner then scroll , scroll, scroll, to find the tile you want. One that's berried with a hundred other tiles. Most of which are not needed and totally useless but get populated anyway. :doh:A slight exaggeration maybe but no more so than yours.
