Computex, Windows 8.1, Intel's Haswell: next PC Hail Mary

Hurry up and Wait, 2.0

Summary: Windows 8.1 may be the fastest refresh from Microsoft other. What's unclear is whether an OS refresh and Intel's latest can save the day.

For the PC industry, the Computex trade show in Taiwan will have a heavy dose of deja vu. New form factors, the latest from Intel and a new version of Microsoft's Windows (sort of) are aligned to drive demand.

Funny how a year makes little to no difference in the Wintel story line.

Last year, Computex highlighted a bevy of Windows 8 devices such as hybrid laptops, touchscreen laptops and tablet convertible devices. None of those devices---excluding touchscreen laptops---generated enough demand to fuel a PC upgrade cycle.

Some of the comments are very funny.
If Windows 8.1 brings back the Start Menu then it will be a disaster. They should remove the desktop immediately instead and have MORE METRO! A few whiners will moan, but they can render themselves unemployable or end up working on the railways / docks or wherever unionised thugs and criminals end up.

The other posters are unsure if he is being sarcastic or is completely insane.

I guess he also can't manage to publish an article online without even proof reading it first. This misplaced word is so obvious I can't even believe it.

Summary: Windows 8.1 may be the fastest refresh from Microsoft other=EVER. What's unclear is whether an OS refresh and Intel's latest can save the day.

And the sad thing is that with Msoft's back tracking and second guessing on 8.1, every thing they "fixed" was complained about very loudly by not millions but billions of PC users world wide, they had plenty of time to make these changes before 8 was released yet they waited an entire year for an attempt to get it right. A day late and many dollars short.

Lesson learned, the customer is ALWAYS right, maybe next time they will set aside the blatent $ arrogance and listen up.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Take a look at the reaction to Xboxone.

Oh boy, the fallout is spreading and it's not looking good for Microsoft.
DRM ... has a 24 hour check-in... Oh fail.... there are fees and restrictions on used games...
anyone who buys a used game on the Xbox One is getting screwed...gamers are livid..
Microsoft has a lot to do to pull themselves out of the pit they've sunk themselves knee-deep into right now.
For shame, Microsoft...for shame.

Xbox One Used Game Fee Has Gamers Raging While Angry Joe Fights Back

MS seem to be rushing around now to try and calm the dissent.

Sony stock went up, and they are sure to take advantage if MS is perceived to be engaging in restrictive practices.
