Study says: Windows 8 users rarely touch Metro apps

Soluto’s report digs into how often people really use those apps on a daily basis.

The news isn’t wonderful. Of the 10,848 Windows 8 devices studied by Soluto, the majority of traditional desktop and laptop users—even ones using a device with a touchscreen—fail to open a modern-style app daily. (Note that this study refers only to modern apps, not to traditional desktop programs.) Even on tablets, the devices best suited for Windows 8’s modern UI, just 56 percent of all users launch a Windows 8 app day in and day out.

Hi there
That sort of study is about the same as saying 100% of alcoholics have certainly drunk at some point in their lives alcohol or that animals drink water when they get thirsty.

I'm surprised that it's low as 58% --I would have thought around 75% never use METRO might be more likely -- certainly after they've tried an app or two and found the experience quite horrible.

I use mostly every day - PHOTOSHOP, OFFICE (particularly EXCEL, OUTLOOK and POWERPOINT), SAP GUI, VMware workstation and browsers - usually IE. None of these apps work in my case decently in Metro mode especially when you need to get data from one or more windows into another application.

I use also a LOGITECH multi-media server for music / video streaming and I use this in window mode -- same as WINAMP - especially if I'm tagging mp3 / FLAC files. I also use Visual studio from time to time and a lot of Market trading applications where I need to see several charts at the same time.

There is almost nothing that I would do on a computer that I need or want in Full screen -- apart from say playing a movie -- and even then I might still have it in a window.

I know the OP said NEW applications -- but I can't say I've FOUND a modern app that I would want to use on a traditional computer - certainly not in full screen mode.

Cheers
jimbo

This is how MS designed the GUI. If you like some Metro apps they are available and if not there is the desktop. The Start Screen is the gateway to both and each of us can make our own choices. I am sure there will be some refinements going forward.

I use all the native Store apps that Kari uses daily. Some of the 3rd party apps are a little different, but about the same amount. Since I log into 8 with my MS account, I'm logged into the apps.

I find the Mail app much, much quicker and easier to use than WLM I used in 7. The live tiles of these apps are feeding me information upon boot or the return to the Start Screen. The amount of emails and from whom, various news headlines, weather in various places, etc. And with these apps I'm not surfing the net where I'm more prone to viruses and the like.

I've noticed as time goes on with updates these apps keep getting better. e.g. the Mail app wasn't all that good back in RP days, but it's quite good now.

I think the apps will used more and more as people discover, learn, and use them.

What an odd statement.

I can see no difference in clicking a tab to select it in order to view it, or selecting an app and switching to it from the suspended apps list.

2013-05-24_182758.png

Visually my method pleases my eye more, 2tabs" showing only when I want to.

Oh, BTW, that's not true what I said above about there being no difference. Of course there's a huge difference: Whereas each and everyone of your 25 opened tabs eats resources and CPU capacity all the time, my suspended apps open as fast as you click a new tab but they are not using CPU at all while suspended.

2013-05-24_183226.png

Also, the suspended app tiles please my eyes more and give more information than the title bar of a browser tab; I mean with 25 tabs open with normal resolution displays you might not even to be able to read what the tab is. Here's for instance IE10 on 1920 pixels wide display showing 25 tabs. You need to guess to get the correct page, not very much information available there:

That's the plan for Windows 8. You have a choice of how you use your system. I use just a few Metro apps but mostly the Desktop. But its all there if I want it.

Why on earth I would need to do that? I can click the links to various news stories on one BBC app in the same time you need in guessing which one of those numerous tabs was which news. With 25 tabs open you might be able to recognize BBC logo on those 5 tabs but there's no place for title, so you really need to guess.

^^ Too funny.

****

This news kinda reminds me of my boyfriend, actually. Specifically with foods. Before he started dating me, he only liked things like hamburger and hotdog. You know, real American foods. And like a typical American, every time I tried to introduce him to something new, he'd declare before even seeing it that he "wouldn't like it". Then when it is in front of him, he'd use the folk to take a grain size piece and put it in his mouth, make a face, and say "yup, I certainly don't like it".

After about a year of dating me, he's gotten better. He can now eat things like chicken fried steak.

I understand that people have preferences, and that is a good thing. But too much "preferences" could easily turn into a disorder.

As I've stated many times, most people are indifferent about the changes. Why? Because most people are tech illiterate. And being tech illiterate, they will stick with what they know. As far as they could remember, it's always been the desktop that symbolizes the computer. So, it is no wonder that half of them prefer to only stay in the desktop environment. Which is perfectly fine in my book.

Now, if MS had taken away the desktop then I'd have a problem with that. But seeing how there are millions and millions of desktop apps out there, it is doubtful MS will kill the desktop anytime soon.

I have an average of 25 pages open on my browser at one time. Having to use 25 apps would be a complete waste of time. I can't see a future where I'd use apps for quite some time yet! I accept others may disagree!

That's the plan for Windows 8. You have a choice of how you use your system. I use just a few Metro apps but mostly the Desktop. But its all there if I want it.

And yet there are those here who are talking as if the desktop has been taken away for good.

Who are "most people". There are over 7 Billion people in this world so someone has checked over 3.5 Billion people to backup their claims. I don't think so.
