Touchscreens to be on a quarter of all notebooks by 2016

My take on the whole touchscreen thing is this. Most people have trouble with compartmentalization. The tablet was first introduced as a purely web browsing and gaming device. People see it as such. That's why most people I know carry around a laptop that is the size of a small car and their tablet for entertainment.

Same goes with touch enabled devices. I see it as adding another UI option to our arsenal. First, we only had the keyboard and those punch cards (for you oldies out there). Then they got rid of the cards and added a mouse. Now, we have a keyboard, a mouse, and touchscreen. What disturbs me is that there are so many "techies" on here that are screaming bloody murder about touch screen as if in the near future they will be forced to only use the touchscreen and no mouse or keyboard. They can't imagine a world where the touchscreen could coexist with the keyboard and mouse.

Reminds me of the typical female human out there. Unlike us Vulcans, once a human female has placed a human male in the "friend zone", the poor male would never ever ever get any. LOL

News anchors are already using touch devices. Works wonderfully, me thinks. I don't understand why people are so afraid that big brother will come and yank their keyboards and mice out of their cold dead hands. What are the basis for this conspiracy theory?

I have to disagree, that is a bit too generally stated.

At work I follow closely small and mid size companies and their IT needs. The iPad revolutionized the way quite a many companies set up their hardware infrastructure; employees do no longer have to rely solely on their laptop, the iPad is quite often the device which follows you to short meetings and business trips. Maligned Windows 8 has there a nice gap in the market as it is the first Windows OS fully touchscreen / tablet compatible.

My bet is this is how Windows 8 finds its way to corporate and business world. Although it is a really small company, I am currently personally involved in helping a customer to migrate. First we got to all 9 sales staff Windows touchscreen tablets. All of them have a Windows 7 laptop and docking station at work and VPN access from home office but when they travel and meet customers they today carry only the Windows 8 tablets, completely integrated in existing Windows 7 Professional network at office. Now beginning of June we start the staff training for the upcoming laptop migration from 7 Pro to 8 Pro, as the owner's interest in Windows 8 grew after seeing how ideal Windows 8 tablets are for his specific use.

In my opinion tablets are not just hobby gadgets for private use, I think they will have ever growing role in how IT infrastructure in companies is built. As a Windows 8 fan myself I also like the idea that this, through tablets, is how 8 will some day be widely accepted as an office workhorse.

I agree. This is a "half full, half empty" argument. I don't understand why some people who thinks that touchscreens are the way to go cannot accept that for others, keyboard and mouse are the way to go. What is this obsessive need they have to make everyone agree with them when only few windows touchscreens have survived the market? There is no significant numbers in windows touchscreen sales to prove that it is any better. I say, windows touchscreens are good if it suits your needs. And I even hate touching my non-touch screens. :DCheers!

A lot of people on here seem to have trouble understanding that touchscreen isn't meant to replace anything. It's just another tool. If you don't like it, then don't use it. I use all 3 (touchscreen, mouse, and keyboard). Some hate touchscreen, and that's understandable.

I still fail to see why so many people keep talking like evil big brother is about to yank their keyboards and mice out of their cold dead hands.

For those that want to pay the steep fee to play with their fingers on the screen fine, I certainly don't want to shell out a fortune for something that has more place on a phone or tablet than on a serious PC ...laptop or desktop.
