Analysts challenge Microsoft's commitment to Windows RT

One of Microsoft's top Windows executives this week said the company remains bullish about Windows RT and has no intention of dumping the limited-feature, touch-enabled tablet operating system.
Analysts accepted that at face value, but they remain suspicious of Windows RT's chances unless Microsoft makes dramatic changes, including dropping the price of the licenses it sells to OEMs.

Milanesi declined to bet that Microsoft would slash Windows RT license prices -- or make the even more aggressive move of giving away the OS -- but said Microsoft has to do something to cut OEM costs.
"Unless [Windows tablets] can match the $199 price of Android tablets, it's going to be really hard for [Microsoft and its OEMs]," said Milanesi. Tablet pricing is polarized, she added, with Android at the bargain basement end and iOS at the top. That gives Microsoft a tough choice and less maneuvering room than it would have had had it entered the tablet market a year or year-and-a-half earlier. "From an app perspective, Microsoft can't get a premium for Windows RT," she added, referring to the relatively small size of the Windows Store and the lack of what she, and others, see as must-have, high-quality apps.

Pitching agianst ipad was not a good idea, Office is not that important to many - specially on those devices. They should have been in at $200-$300 from the start. They should have marketed rt to distinguish it from windows.

Seems to be taking an awfully long time to catch on. I have been saying this stuff since before they released them.

Somehow, by some miracle the clowns at MS missed the fact that if you make something look too much like something else, people will expect them to be the same. Always been this way.

When iOS came out on the big screen, nobody complained that iOS couldn't run apps intended for macOS. Why? Because Apple made sure they look different.

Let's just admit it without the political correctness. Most people are too tech ignorant to know any better. I cringe every time I see a tech reviewer describe RT as a dumbed down version of windows 8. This is a totally mischaracterization of RT. It's like saying iOS is a dumbed down version of macOS. Has anyone ever say that in the tech industry?

I blame both people's ignorance as well the clowns at MS's decision to make RT and 8 look the same.

What is funny here, is that if "Android is Bargain Basement and iOS is at the top" - More people are willing to go broke buying iOS devices, hahahaha.

Looks like those that are counting on RT's doom and gloom are in for a nasty awakening. Short-sightedness is not a commendable virtue.

RT will be here for quite some time and is about to be all up in your face.

NVIDIA: Many Upcoming Windows RT Tablets Will Run On Tegra 4 Processors

Speaking at the earnings report conference, Rene Haas, Nvidia’s VP of computing products told that Nvidia is working on next-generation Tegra 4 processors that will run on Windows RT tablets.
“Nvidia is very invested and very committed to Windows RT, and we feel it has a bright future,” said Haas said. “We feel this [platform] is where things are going.”
He also revealed that next-generation Tegra 4 processors will run on “multiple” versions of upcoming Windows RT tablets without specifying which OEM will release it and when it will be on sale. Tegra 4 is Nvidia’s next gen chip which has a quad-core system-on-a-chip based on ARM’s Cortex-A15 architecture that has been clocked at 1.9GHz. It also includes 72 custom graphics processor cores to support super-high-definition 4K resolution, console level graphics gaming and High Dynamic Range photography.

I doubt RT's failure has anything to do with the processor. I've never heard of an Android or iPad user rave about the processor in their device.

From which crystal ball do you read that. Do you really think the Tegra 4 will be an RT exclusive. I bet you that the Android support will be ahead of the RT support. And only some crazes will buy a tablet that has no apps library to speak of.

MS will be trying to sell a very different product from windows rt that has failed and died.

It will use a much altered version of the original rt os and will be on different devices at different price points.

If they have any sense they will do some kind of rebranding exercise.

It is a different product.

I don't know if they will bother to keep the desktop part going. It was there to run the cut down office thing.

Not clear to me if they are still going to push that as some kind of usp, or if they want to lower the cost and dump it.

I don't know if it's Window RT they're very bullish about, or just WinRT code. THAT I bet is more important as that is the common core between Windows Phone and Windows 8, WinRT. Build an app on Windows Phone, easily to recompile it for Windows and vice versa. But of course, it needs to run on the ARM processor...

The other thing that comes to mind is that Windows 8.1 on RT will see the actual end of the Desktop sooner rather than later. Once Office becomes a WinRT suite, no need for a Desktop at all on Windows RT devices.

Yes, and the sooner devs get on board the better for everyone.

The machine has no signs of slowing down. Better to just embrace it and push forward for all.

[h=1]Android is crushing Apple and Microsoft in the mobile device market[/h]
Given Android's success in the mobile market, one has to wonder how long it will be until we see the operating system loaded onto PCs and go head-to-head against Windows and iOS. Given the way that buyers (consumers and enterprise alike) have embraced Android on smartphones and tablets — activations of new devices sit at 1.5 million daily, or 45 million every month — it seems logical to give consumers what they want, and put this operating system onto notebooks, convertibles, and hybrid systems.

That is interesting. Not too surprising, I suppose. It shows the OP is human.

...seems more like internal company politics and hierarchy are encumbering progress.

"I Contribute to the Windows Kernel. We Are Slower Than Other Operating Systems. Here Is Why." - Zorinaq

This was an interesting contribution but did not at all amaze me. Having worked in a similar environment for 35 years, I can confirm that this is the way how large central development groups usually work. That is not special to Microsoft.

Comparing that environment to Linux is not really fair. The Linux groups are decentralized and their motivations are very different to those of a large business operation which wants to minimize trouble.

What has not amazed me either is one of the comments that a reader made.

What’s wrong with “9-5 with kids types,” it doesn’t make you a worse programmer to want a healthy work life balance. If you’re able to pull that off it even suggests a level of skill that your company will allow you
Those young 9 to 5 people made me take early retirement. People that were earning between $60K to $100K (20 years ago) were not willing to put in an extra effort when needed. They were pointing to their work contract that stated 38 hours per week. This is not the way how you can make major developments. When we were young in the 60's, that was very different - 80 hour weeks were not rare.

I will need to research this, but Microsoft's research project's of Singularity and Midori that have been floating around for five or so years now made me realize something; the Midori/Singularity OS's aren't meant to replace Windows, they're concept platforms meaning they're developing those to IMPLEMENT into Windows. I read that Midori or Singularity sandboxes running applications to increase security. Windows 8's WinRT apps do just that. The system contracts, or Charms bar, is a system managed water channel to allow apps to communicate with each other. There are certain other things about Midori I need to research again about as this was a year ago or so, but it honestly sounds like Windows 8. Microsoft are also still continuing on Midori development...

I was just coming to realize this - Metro and Desktop are in fact two wholly different Operating Systems within Windows 8 - Which is why some of the fixes for desktop problems won't work in relation to repairing Metro, which has it's own repair apps.
