Microsoft Talks About "Blue" and Windows Future

The way I read this there will be a START button leading to the START SCREEN.

Start button, Part Deux. WIRED later brings up the topic again and leads JLG with “is there meaningful discussion” about bringing it back? “There have been discussions … meaningful discussion. But we believe fully in the Start screen and the model of having these live tiles. The [old] Start menu was never really built for multiple applications … the Start screen offers dramatic improvement. Windows today is so much more than launching applications … the [old] Start menu is not the be-all, end-all. [But] the button might be helpful to have on the screen. We’re principled in the direction we’re heading, but we’re not going to be stubborn … It’s not to spite you.” [Laughs]

They are being spiteful.

How did the phrase Start button somehow translate to start menu to begin with?

It seems more like graphing onto whatever there is grasp onto...

Cokie.

It is because the start menu is what the users are asking for most.

Naturally when listening to users and start button were mentioned, it was taken to mean button and menu.

Start button is completely and utterly pointless if it brings up the much hated full size screen.

Worse, it is an ambush.

A UI link and a piece of UI are two different things.

A facebook app is also what users ask for the most.

I don’t think there’s anything I haven’t heard, before we shipped, since we shipped

So why didn't you respond to what you heard before - rather than now?

Miss Julie

No, it isn't deliberately to spite users. It is to push MS agenda. If that is bad for the users - hard luck they will have to put up with it.

Cokie,

It is not practical to write a giant tome so that you won't deliberately misconstrue each post.

It is perfectly obvious the main issue is the removal of the start menu.

If that is not obvious to you - I can't help you.

Huh? What giant tome?

And no, that is the actual wants of the consumer with Windows 8, a start menu and a facebook app. If you want to deny that, go ahead. I can't stop you from denying fact.

Oh, I hope they don't bring back the start menu, and boot directly to desktop etc. Back to back disasters may be the only thing to shake things up at ms central. Fire the lot of them and bring in folks with a clue.

Is there actually any tangible proof that millions of users a clamouring for a Start Button? I've never encountered a real person who said 'I won't buy Windows 8 because the a-holes took away that Start Button', however, I've encountered plenty who had no idea it was gone and also a few who didn't even know what the Start Button was. I think this is so overblown.

I'm reminded of the meltdown that happened amongst star wars nerds over the Star Wars special editions, when Lucas altered the classic films. Its so funny, people get twisted in knots about it even today. "Han shot Greedo first!" they say. The funny things is the overwhelming majority of the human race don't care. They don't even know who Greedo is. This is like that. This is manufactured issue that only 'computer people' actually care about.

Its an excuse for Apple and Linux lovers to find a reason to say "Look how terrible Microsoft is".

The funniest thing is its so easy for the user to put back if they want it there. There's really no issue here.

PC sales aren't poor because of Windows 8. They weren't great before it either. Has it ever occurred to people that it probably has more to do with the rise of tablets than anything to do with the PC itself? Just think about it, how many millions of casual users simply bought a PC for web browsing, email and playing Facebook games? That number was very high. Tablets are a better tool for that use case. My wife is the perfect example. She always had a computer, but ever since she got her IPad she NEVER uses it at all. Why? She doesn't need it for anything she does. My mother-in-law is the same way. There are millions of former PC users out there who now use tablet, mainly IPad as their 'PC' they don't need a computer, and never really liked them in the first place. My wife has often spoken of her relief at no longer needing one. Why? She didn't have a very good knowledge of her computer in the first place, it was all confusing. Outside of the Firefox and Word icons she basically didn't click anything else. You would be amazed how many people there are out there like that. They have abandoned PCs because they don't need them, and their tablet is simpler and easier and more fun to use.

Nobody outside of tech circles cares about the Start Button.

Hi there
Where on Earth did you get that piece of rubbish from -- Most people I know absolutely HATE "Farcebook" and want nothing to do with it. In any case that type of application is hardly relevant to the discussion in question - is it. FB works if you must use it on mobile devices without any problem - and probably is one of the few apps that might be BETTER started from a Metro type screen.

Cheers
jimbo

The arrogance at MS is truly stunning, and regrettably deserving of a complete and total failure of the company.

I have met many people that all have asked that the option of default boot to desktop be included in Windows 8, they all say that when using the OS on the typical desktop or laptop the Metro UI is frustrating and annoying, none want to play around with touch on their pc.

I'm glad the media picked up on my comparison between Windows 8 and New Coke. I have the strongest belief that if the Coca Cola Company had REFUSED to listen to the desires of the customers they would have ended up out of business.

I guess that The Coca Cola Company should have included instructions on how to recreate the original formula with the New Coke product bought by the consumer?

:dinesh:

Point is that you shouldn't have to add a external program to get such a basic function on Windows 8.
