The TIMES - Ms presses Delete Key on W8

Hi there
Interesting article from a quite respected British Newspaper "The Times". This paper isn't usually renowned for Lurid / inaccurate journalism and is still one of the World's great journalistic institutions.

Microsoft presses delete key on Windows redesign | The Times

The blog could though contain a slight error -- I don't think the slide (touch) screen is going away --sure there will be TWO modes of operating W8 -- but obviously interesting times ahead.

Cheers

Update : please read post nr 3 in the thread for the whole article as I forgot it's behind a paywall as I'm a TIMES subscriber.

The article is behind a paywall

Hi -- sorry - forgot that -- however the essence is there Ms is going to re-design the OS -- I'll see if I can get another source that people can read.

I subscribed to the Times since I often read it on my mobile -- very handy when travelling.

Here' the rest

....A radical overhaul of the famous Windows software has backfired on Microsoft only seven months after the technology company pledged to “shatter the perceptions” of what was possible on a computer. The Windows 8 software, which allows users to prod and swipe at their computer screen as if it were a tablet, has been blamed for a slump in computer sales in recent months. Microsoft has decided to revert to the more antiquated but more familiar style as a result of the consumer backlash.
Windows 8 was seen as a make-or-break release for the company and it put a brave face on the U-turn, arguing that more than 100 million licences to use the new software had been sold.
But it admitted that the impending “Windows Blue” upgrade would allow the company to “respond to the customer feedback we’ve been closely listening to since the launch”. A Microsoft executive, Tami Reller, head of marketing and finance for Windows, said that the changed look, based on blinking, colourful tiles and designed to work for smartphones, computers and tablets, had proved too difficult for some users.
Richard Holway, a technology analyst at the research company TechMarketView, said that the change had deterred people from buying new laptops.
He added that it had increased the pressure on Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s long-serving chief executive, who has endured a tough few years as the company has struggled in the smartphone and tablet markets. “This time Ballmer really does have to fess up and do the honourable thing,” Mr Holway said.
The irony is that Apple’s iPhone, a design triumph bought and loved by millions, is on the brink of a radical makeover in the style of the Windows “live tiles” system. It is believed that Apple will scrap an array of familiar icons — such as the calendar that looks like a leather-bound physical diary, the notepad that appears as yellow-lined legal paper and the battery indicator that looks like a battery — in favour of a much more minimalist design.
It is likely to be the most eye-catching development in the upgrade of Apple’s iOS system, due to be unveiled next month, in a process driven by the British executive Sir Jonathan Ive. ..........................

Doesn't really tell us much though does it?

Pretty misleading headline. Having seen the videos of Blue, I'd hardly call it 'deleting 8', its adding to it.

Don't get me wrong, I use 8, in desktop mode via classic shell and I like it just fine.

What I object to is some shill from ms claiming it was anyone other than their own fault for the metro mess, and claiming the 'we' just weren't smart enough to use it....

You shouldn't be confused, only those that love Windows 8 appear to want no criticism of the OS, the rest are easy going and quite liberal about open discussion.

Some ominous comments from the delightful Tami:

Ms Reller said PC users had faced difficulties adapting to the new software.

Since when is not liking something a "difficulty" - except in the sense that it is a difficulty for MS.

changes were needed to make Windows 8 easier to navigate and capable of taking full advantage of the technology improvements that have come out since October.

Technology improvements - surely you can't be referring to yet more metro stuff - you used the word improvement.

"We've considered a lot of different scenarios to help traditional PC users move forward as well as making usability that much better on all devices"

Move forward? To what - let me guess - more metro stuff. Why is that described as forward rather than different, or sideways , or backward?

It looks like a big push - the spin is going into overtime.

Those ridiculous comments by MS Tami Reller show what happens when you have MBAs running the show at a company. It is utter ARROGANCE to insult the customer as she is by claiming that they can't learn how to use it. OUTRAGEOUS!

The fact is that the Metro UI is NOT practical on traditional PC and laptops. The traditional desktop continues to be the most productive way to operate these computers.

Bill Gates, Paul Allen, and the shareholders need to send a message to Mr. Ballmer....

STOP INSULTING THE CUSTOMER.

I doubt that Microsoft is about to do a U-turn yet.

Puh-lease.... your spaghetti of an os was rejected because it was a festering spaghetti, not because it was too difficult....

I believe that Microsoft is busy polishing and tying ribbons around the above mentioned object hoping that is all it will take for people to like it.

I'm sure there are.

It isn't a well kept secret that the legions of MBAs that come out of these expensive schools often times have little or no experience or knowledge about how to actually run a business successfully.

Heck even former GM boss Bob Lutz stated that MBAs are killing US companies.
