Tami Reller Talks Windows 8.1 "Blue"

Microsoft executive Tami Reller maintains the proverbial stiff upper lip in various interviews this week, but the underlying message is clear enough: Despite public protestations to the contrary, the firm has heard the complaints. And in the coming update, code named “Blue,” it’s going to try and do right by those customers who feel alienated by this release.

Only time will tell if they have heard.

This has me worried.

“We are being principled, not stubborn,” she told Ms. Foley.

So word on Cnet says Blue will not be free? If that is true I will immediately sell my new Sony touch with W8 and buy a Mac. I will not pay for updates to OS.

Ah that's interesting - where did you see that?

I'm pretty sure it won't be free for everybody of course - if I was upgrading from Windows XP to 8.1 for instance then I'd expect to pay something. So when they talk of "pricing" that may be what they mean?

From what I understood originally, the first release of Blue would be free to update Windows 8 to satisfy their customers.

After that, Windows Blue, or whatever it may be called then, may be either a subscription based or pay as you go OS updates. These wouldn't be minor updates like in Windows Updates.

We shall see.

Here:
Microsoft to reveal Windows Blue pricing, availability soon | Microsoft - CNET News

"Reller said the Windows team will share pricing, packaging, and go-to-market details about Blue in the next couple of weeks."

Surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to charge me to go from 8.0 to 8.1

But then again, MS excels at shooting themselves in the foot.

Well presumably they won't be imagining they'd sell many more copies of 8.0 (because 8.1 will be better, right?!) so even if 8 to 8.1 is free, there will still be a bunch of products that need "pricing". For instance the XP/Vista/7 upgrade (assuming they still exist), the System Builder versions, and 8.1-to-8.1 Pro (or whatever).

    That's basically it.
As of right now, Windows Blue or 8.1 or whatever it's called is purely speculation regarding price, distribution, and upgrading. All we know about it is what we've seen so far with the leaked builds, beyond that, it's just grains of salt.

Just like with the new Xbox and the always-connected debacle, it's been sourced somewhere else that it's not really true. Developers can choose if THEY want that to be so with their games. But still again, purely speculation.

Since Microsoft is trying to "Save Face" with "Blue" or "8.1" for those who bought or upgraded to Windows 8 prior to the new Upgrade should get the Upgrade Free. It should be offered in Windows Update or offered on a specific Website saying something like "If you have a legitimate Copy of Windows 8 you are entitled to download this upgrade for free"

If they do not, I am betting they will loose many customers and leave a real bad taste in those who have it now and need to spend money to upgrade what Microsoft should have done in the first place to make this a worthwhile OS!

Hi there

Not sure about the logic here -- although I agree about not wanting to pay for Updates to Windows but haven't updates for Apple OS'es always been chargeable. -- I'm not an Apple user so I might be wrong but I seem to have read that Apple always charges for these things.

As for News Forum -- of course we have speculation, gossip and rumours etc -- if you follow English Football just listen today about all the speculation about whether the long time manager of Manchester United Football club - Ferguson - (27 years he's been there) is about to quit or not. That's what a lot of News is -- speculation -- and why not.

Cheers
jimbo
