Windows 8 inches up in desktop OS market

Windows 8 is slowly scratching its way up the OS food chain.
Microsoft's latest version of Windows took home 3.8 percent of all traffic captured by Web tracker Net Applications in April. That proved a small gain from its 3.2 percent share in March.
Starting with a 1.09 percent share in November, Windows 8 sliced out a 1.72 percent share in December. A 2.26 percent share in January helped it sneak past Mac OS X 10.8 to grab fourth place among all desktop operating systems. And February saw another small gain to 2.7 percent.
The stats also looked at both traditional PCs and touch-screen computers. Of the 3.8 percent share earned last month, Windows 8 touch-screen PCs accounted for 0.02 percent. Windows RT touch-screen computers were unable to register any blip at all on Net Applications' radar.

At this rate Windows 8 will be lucky to have 8% in the next 6 months.

Microsoft insists that Windows RT has a grand and glorious future. But if the accumulated Web usage statistics from the past six months can be trusted (always a dicey proposition), the operating system doesn't even have a pulse. Adding insult to injury, Lenovo's Think PC and visual category manager says he doesn't believe Windows RT "is what businesses want."
Looks like consumers don't want it either.

The numbers for RT are even worse for M$.

I just don't understand. I think Windows 8 is just fine yes it takes some getting used to. But It is all around good. We still have the desktop if it is needed or wanted. It is just optimized for touch screen's now. People just need to understand that things need to change stuff can not always be the same for ever. I think this is most of the problem. People do not want change and change is necessary in all aspects of life. As far as I am concerned change is one of the best most exciting parts of life nowadays. Yes it sucks at times and it is hard to keep up with all the changes these days. But almost all of it is for the better.

In this case metro sucks and people want the old stuff back unless M$ improves metro there will be a lot of complaints and a lot of money kept in the pocket.

Put a fork in it

LOL.

I expect they will keep pushing it out, subsidising where necessary.

There is only so long the hapless punter will be able to hold out.

If they don't manage to get 8 ( or 8.1 ) to work out for them, they will have lost a lot of ground in the consumer space.

It's still possible Tim Cook may make a move.

It would become very interesting if he did.

I'd say one of the major reasons is that no one really needs to upgrade from Windows 7 (or even XP for that matter) and they don't like what they've seen of Windows 8. It doesn't matter that some people love the start screen and loss of start button, whether you can work around that or not, it's clear that the vast majority of people see things differently.

If we are lucky, they will allow us to have a special button.

That will bring up the much loved and revered start screen.

What is the actual point of RT? I've never fathomed that, given Windows 8 has the same functionality.

If Microsoft had wanted a leaner OS to extend battery life, simplify things or the like, why not design Windows 8 as a dual-mode OS and be able to switch between the two for when you want to work hard and when you want to play lean. I believe that one manufacturer actually offers a laptop that runs both Windows and Android for that very purpose.

Acer waits for Windows RT 8.1 to make tablet decision

Acer is waiting for the next version of Windows RT, due in the second half of this year, before deciding whether to release a tablet that runs on that OS.
"The plan for an RT tablet is ongoing," said Acer President Jim Wong in an interview Friday at a company event in New York.

even OEMs don't like Win RT.

Have any of you even used Windows RT? I have, and although it obviously doesn't stack up to full Windows, its a very, very good mobile OS. I was given a 32gb Surface RT and have found it to be an excellent tablet.

Steam Hardware & Software Survey

Windows 8 is already over 11% on the Steam Hardware Survey. that's a better indicator in terms of people who regularly spend money on their PCs.

the older indicators include PCs that people never intend on upgrading in any way. the people who have Windows XP on a Pentium 4 machine and are still using Office XP or Office 2003. They've fallen off the upgrade curve and are fine with that.

Exactly what proportion of the computing public are avid gamers, those who almost continually upgrade their PCs?

when you're doing metrics, you look at metrics that matter. marketshare at all cost doesn't mean squat. if you want just marketshare, you can give it away for free.

if you're polling people who they're going to vote for the presidential election, you don't poll everyone. you poll people most likely to vote.

same thing with PC purchases. you look for the demographics that spend money. way back when, people scoffed at the notion of metrics looking at the smartphone buying demographic. smartphones were a sliver of a population base compared to feature phones. and now smartphones are becoming the dominant base.

If you look at some of those net metrics, those ancient IE versions still have a significant share. But that audience that uses them aren't targeted by anyone anymore. It's why Microsoft is having to pose their latest IE as a Mozilla browser so that the browser gets fed the correct form.

So you're effectively agreeing with me that the majority of people, the mainstream computer users, don't even need Windows 8.

So someone would have to go buy a 700 dollar x86 Windows 8 tablet PC just to check their email and internet browsing? Windows RT is better suited for that and less expensive currently. Problem is though, OEMs decided to make their RT tablets to be at least 600 dollars, hence why there wasn't a strong reason to go RT over full blown 8.

It seems 8.1 will change that though, with smaller 8 inch tablets with RT will be more effective in that arena.
