Is touch already already passe?

Unless it is free, I cannot afford new technology. My system is set in stone for the next 10 years at least unless I upgrade the motherboard and cpu. Touch or Leap Motion will not happen.

    That's basically it.
The Leap motion controller, which can be attached to any PC, apparently costs $80; not really a big deal if it can provide benefits. Certainly much cheaper than buying a touch screen.

Nice fine Ray. Really surprised the Fruit Company hasn't discovered a way to install it into their iMac line and then say something like, "Apple has now put such and such into their iMac line of computers." Then all the Mac fans would be going around and saying see how great and wonder "Apple" is; they invented this whole new way of computing. . .:roflmao:

You mean kind of like what happened with the smart phone industry? It wouldn't be a surprise at all if it happens exactly as you describe it. I hope it does.

Hi there
Motion sensory stuff -- not pratical at all in a lot of places.

Can you imagine this technology being used in a crowded place or even in most offices (some of which are quite crowded anyway).

Just imagine a Visitor walking into an office with everybody gyrating around like mad and making in some cases what could be mis-interpreted as Obscene Gestures.

If the visitor doesn't immediately RUN OUT of the building as fast as possible I'm sure he'll be on the phone immediately to call the vehicles with the men in the white coats to take everyone to "those special Hospitals".

Cheers

I expect it will useful in certain situations.

Not sure it will replace everything else - good to have another input method to complement the others.

It might replace touch on some devices, but probably not immediately on very small devices, like watches.

Hi there
Unless one was blind / severly visually handicapped what possible use for TOUCH is there on a WATCH for GAWDS Sake. Or are we going into the James Bond era where by turning the watch dial you launch a laser beam about as powerful as the Phasers in Star Trek.

Limited motion sensors on watches though actually aren't a bad idea - they could re-charge a battery or even wind up an old fashioned spring -- saving manufacturing of batteries that use very environmentally unfriendly toxic heavy metals. And I'm not referring to some Bands who play that type of music which some would also judge as "Environmentally Unfriendly". (Actually although I usually like Classical Music I quite enjoy some Heavy Metal Bands too !!).

I have a small LED torch I carry around with me --it charges up via motion sensor -- don't even have to wind it up. !! - You never know when travelling on the London Metro (Underground / Tube system) when you are going to get stuck for hours in a crowded station - or even on a train / or be stuck in the Channel Tunnel for Hours on a Eurostar train.

Cheers
jimbo

How is touch passé when it isn't even the mainstream on ALL computing devices? The mouse is passé.

But this technology is interesting, for 80 dollars and is more precise than the Kinect? I've thought from day one this was to be vaporware and too good to be true. I'll have to gestures the tires so to speak. :geek: I see this in part with touch, and in part with speech. Touch, gesture, and speech are what is needed for the Natural User Interface. There is no mouse in this scenario. Think Star Trek "Computer."

Personally, this is how I will be able to control my PC from a distance, or so I hope. I've yet to read about how FAR one can use this accurately, and if this can be used to accurately control the Windows 8 UI. If so, then YES! :dinesh:

Mouse is (mainstream and still) possible on all computing devices with USB or PS2 connectors.

I see all tablets have a USB connector. I wonder if I connect a mouse to it to see how it goes...

In the Android VM's I use on my PC I get a nice blue-neon looking mouse pointer.
