Windows 9: How Microsoft might overhaul the interface

Every graying movie franchise needs a great sequel to give it a boost. Think Star Trek and James Bond. Operating systems are no different—especially Microsoft's. After receiving a critical beatdown for Windows 8, what does the company have up its sleeve for Windows 9?

It's too early to call Windows 8 either a success or a failure, but it's never too soon to ask what's next, particularly in connection with a rumored mid-2013 update dubbed “Windows Blue.” Microsoft will have to pull off a tricky balancing act with its next version of Windows: It must satisfy its existing base of users while transitioning from the old desktop paradigm to the new touch-first interface. As matters stands, there's definitely room for improvement.

Microsoft declined to answer questions about how it might build on Windows in the future. So we've done some brainstorming—with the help of a few trusty experts—to imagine potential ways forward.

Brainstorming. . .that is just another way of saying "Sure hope Microsoft get it act together, and does things the way we tell them it should be. . .:roflmao:

Let's hope these guys are wrong. I do not need an 'ecosystem' - I need an operating system with which I can properly run my desktop. That's all I need.

I would like an ecosystem, I already use several Microsoft products and services and I'd rather see them better intertwine them than segregate them.

What's wrong with being old. I may not be able to compete with the youngsters in a 100 meter sprint, but I would have no problem competing in a 100 minute brainwash. LOL

Hi there
"Ecosystem" -- Bah - it's just another piece of "Consultant ese". There's even more disagreements in finding a decent "Eco system" than you would get between a bunch of economists on working out how to get the world's economy working again.

First we have "Biofuels" as the next big clean fuel - in fact they cause more damage to the environment than the diesel it was meant to replace - apart from causing the loss of Food production with the attendant problems that causes in poor parts of the world -- then we have the Nuclear lobby who forget about things like Tsunamis, Chenobyl etc and don't worry what happens to the waste products of these power stations, sheer corporate greed by the constructors of these things - cutting corners / using cheaper materials etc to boost their profits without caring two hoots about the risk this causes -- and then the entire "Green Energy lobby" where around 90% of it is just purely an expensive HORRIBLE joke for which the consumer is paying a TERRIBLY HIGH price.

I'm in favour of decent clean energy but the Politicians have screwed up the whole argument so completely - and of course whose paying for it. Not them on their cast iron pensions and fat salaries.

(And I haven't even STARTED on the whole global warming nonsense yet).

It's abundantly clear that there are basically two different methods of working - you either are quite happy to work in the same way as you would with a mobile phone / tablet or you need a multi-tasking windowable mode like W7 say.

The two just do not mix.

Cheers
jimbo
