AMD - No DirectX 12

This is a strange story that is difficult to make sense of. An AMD Vice President of Global Channel Sales, Roy Taylor, has said that there will be no DirectX12 at any time in the future.

Of course you could say what does a VP of Global Channel Sales know about what Microsoft is up to, even if he did work for NVIDIA for ten years previously. On the other hand, why would he say something so provocative in an interview with German magazine, Heise.de.

Well, that makes some sense, because directx 9 is still the base of everything else, and newer x versions are just big puffs - they introduced new directx version, released a few games with it (of course, you still can play it with directx 9, newer x version was just like add-on :D) and forgot it, then again introduced newer version and the same goes again and again... still majority of games are based on directx 9, just a very few are directx 11 or so... I dont think, that its worth to do same mistake again, its much more important to make the game interesting, bug-free as possible, and graphics of directx 11 is more than enough. Plus with all that pc / mobile os mixing, its just impossible to say, what with happen in near future, because windows 8 popularity is not something big, and if ms will go same way with next big os release (i mean, real release, not some stupid update like 8.1 :D), then its definitely not worth to develop directx 12, because even now, if some games would be only directx 11, without option to go back to x9, almost no one would buy it.

Sound a bit absurd but...

Yep, agree about dx9 story, maybe they will rename the technology, that is the only good reason DX12 will come no more.

In one or another form we will still use GFX acceleration so an API or something will be there DX12 or not.

    That's basically it.
Well, everyone now is focusing on mobile devices market - apple, microsoft, google and many others with their tablets and "mobile phones", plus all the gaming consoles now are low-end and newer consoles will be with x version of 10, maybe 11, and desktop pc's are being forgotten in a way, so no one really needs directx 12 or anything like that for at least maybe 10 years, because no one will use it and technology war is going another way, to the mobile devices market.

I'm with Hopachi. They might delay DX12 for some years or even rename the technology, but not quit the thing.

Would it be viable for Microsoft to start supporting OpenGL?

I think the idea is that DirectX is somehow as great as it could ever be, which is ridiculous. Microsoft wouldn't switch to OpenGL, they'd just quit moving DirectX forward. I think the OP is wrong, because DirectX is also used in other applications than just games, and newer versions improve not just graphics, but also ease of programming and efficiency, which I'm sure is very important to Microsoft.
