Do we need another Windows OS?

Microsoft made a case this week for Windows RT, its stripped down version of Windows 8. But do we need a third version of Windows?

It's been about five months now since Windows RT debuted. And this week Microsoft made a case to CNET for the new operating system.

Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president, Windows Planning, Hardware & PC Ecosystem, told CNET: "It was a ton of work for us and we didn't do the work and endure the disruption for any reason other than the fact that there's a strategy there that just gets stronger over time."

And he went on to spell out reasons why RT is necessary.

Isn't Windows RT just a version of Windows for ARM processors? Like a Windows xp 64 bit Edition?

The only way that will happen is, if over the next 2 to 3 years,
people just refuse to use Win8 en masse they will change.
They can hold out for a while before it starts to hurt and they realize what it is people want

However, people are sheople, they will flock to what is popular.
If MS can pull this off and make it popular, it will survive and you will never see a start menu again unless you add through 3rd party.
But if rumors hold true, it won't matter cause the Desktop will no longer exist.

While I like 8 the way it is now, with the customizations I can do now, what comes in the near future remains to be seen.

I don't think that is likely.

There is only so long people can hold off.

Prices have been slashed which may help MS .

MS can continue to subsidise the oems and wait it out.

What would change things is if competition suddenly appears. Where would that come from.

Intel will be a big player in this with their new Haswell chip. If it lives up to its fanfare of better performance and low wattage it could replace ARM in tablets and then we won't need RT.

Civic responsibility and monopoly generally don't work in the same sentence....

Technically yes, they have a monopoly, but why? Why, when a Linux variant can be used an alternative to Microsoft's clientele?

Apple can do what it wants with OSX, as it's predominantly an artists computer OS, so the mainstream users don't really care. Linux has so many variations that it doesn't matter what they do, there'll always be one variation to suit one's needs. Linux user groups generally also listen to their users, which is why Mint has become so popular when Canonical refused to listen and kept on with Unity.

Microsoft appears to betting the farm on their new directions; no desktop, subscription everything, 'all your apps belong us'. Microsoft is probably so committed now that they can't turn back, unless everything falls on its face. They are trying to do an Apple and if so, I won't feel sorry if they fail.

RT isn't going away.. Haswell or not. And we allready have a hybrid in the Surface Pro. Microsoft is going to make some form of Surface Mini at 5-7" that will replace Surface RT and compete with the iPad Mini. Could also be a form of phablet. Not much reason to make a tablet at the small form factor without the capability for cell phone access anymore tbh.

GNOME is somewhat like the traditional interface used in just about every iteration of Windows up to version 7.

UNITY is a side bar that attempts to put what Canonical believe are the most used functions in Ubuntu into a vertical series of icons. It's like a mini MPI.

Both UIs serve the same function predominantly, as Ubuntu doesn't really use apps. The UNITY interface tries to simplify the user experience. Most Linux users don't like the idea of 'simplify'.

GNOME is somewhat like the traditional interface used in just about every iteration of Windows up to version 7.

That is true of GNOME 2.x (the best version).

GNOME 3 adopted the Apple(?) idea of a single disembodied menu (i.e. you can't swap from one window to another, by clicking on the menu bar in the second window, because there are no menu bars in either window).

GNOME 3 is hated almost as much as Unity.

It seems that a lot of long-time Linux users have swapped to KDE, XCFE, or some other desktop environment (GUI).

From what I've seen, GNOME and Unity look basically the same. Unity has some more visual design that I've seen paralleled with Windows 8 (Start Screen) and os x, GNOME is basically like most Linux versions I've worked with, very basic, very focused on the user knowing their Linux stuff, not for the common plebian.

But with Ubuntu though, the differences to me are so minimal, it's odd to think that would be considered upsetting. Really? That's what's used to compare to Windows 8? That's not even a comparison. Windows 8 is more like going from ios to Windows Phone, not like GNOME to Unity. That's more android to ios.
