Windows 8’s Flash whitelist goes black

Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 and Windows RT contains an embedded version of Flash, updated through Windows Update. However, not all Flash sites can actually use this embedded Flash. On Windows 8, the Metro version of Internet Explorer can only use Flash on a list of sites that Microsoft authorizes. Only the desktop version has full unfettered Flash access. On Windows RT, both Metro and desktop Internet Explorer use the whitelist.

That's going to change tomorrow when the list will change from a whitelist to a blacklist. Flash will work on every site except a selection that Microsoft is explicitly blocking due to known incompatibilities with touch. Desktop Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 will continue to be unrestricted.

Hi there
Any idea if this update will fix the well know VIDEO problem (or inability to play video in IE 10) when using W2012 server.

Although IE on a server often isn't a requirement there are times when it's convenient. Currently IE10 won't play embedded video from a website when using W2012 server (In Desktop mode of course). Note W2012 can operate in basic command mode - no metro or any GUI which is quite OK for a server - but you CAN enable at install time the "Desktop experience" to get a very similar GUI to W8 -- and it's in the desktop that IE fails with video from a web site.

(Metro also exists - but whoever thought of having Metro on a SERVER must IMO have been STARK RAVING BONKERS).

Cheers

Hi there
That's OK for IE10 on W8 but it still doesn't address the problem on W2012 server -- the version of IE10 shipped with W2012 either has incompatible flash or it won't install as the software will say "Flash player is already up to date".

A while ago I started a thread on Video in W2012 server -- it still doesn't work BTW.

I don't think I've ever come across Flash player issues so far, I guess I don't peruse certain Flash based sites..... that don't render in immersive IE... If you know what I mean.

My company makes apps that rely on the flash player. We had to apply to get included in the whitelist, which we got approved and added to about 1 week ago. Now, it doesn't matter and everything works unless MS blacklisted you.

That was a fun exercise in paperwork.

Windows 8 Flash Content.

Windows 8 announced, a few days ago, that it has reversed policy and now has reverted from Blacklist Flash Content, to White list in IE10. This was supposed to be done in an update.

Does anyone know if, or how, the blacklist aspect may have affected the overall situation and any problems that developed with users in the past ?

It seems that some websites were blocked due to incompatibility. There has certainly been a lot of incompatibility issues but it isn't very clear if any of these were related to this subject.
