New Windows Boss Confirms Start Menu Is Not Coming Back

While a Start Menu would obviously make the transition (and for some, life) a lot easier, it would ultimately be a 180° for Microsoft and its future plans to integrate the PC with mobile devices.

I don't think they will be keen to do that.

It takes a very big person to do a U turn.

It also rather affects their main thrust to monetarise the punters. Start screen is a major factor in that. Plucking the turkey without it squealing - I reckon a few people have noticed.

Chances of them turning win 8 around with Blue are increasing as time goes by. We shall see. There are other ways to prominently feature things that encourage the users into their monetisation scheme. It doesn't have to be forced by a full screen coming at you at every opportunity.

And they won't for probably another 3-6 months. The entire game atm is the mobile arena(specifically convertibles, a new device line exclusive to the Windows market) and everyone seems to know it but you.

PC adoption slow? So what. It was never an operating system designed specifically for the PC. It was designed to change the game and evolve the industry past where Apple could keep up. That doesn't happen overnight.

Reports of its pending demise are premature, Ray.

Mightn't be as common as before, but, despite the claims of some, it isn't going anywhere in a hurry.

Imagine them all sitting there with no content to consume because we don't have the tools to create it on?

For serious gamers and those with heavy tasks to accomplish, the desktop will be king for many years yet.

Wenda.

I know, but the way some here talk, it would seem that the future is all about touching ourselves. Metaphorically speaking of course.

The Windows 7 start meny IS back om both my Win 8 computers, and it was really easy to get it there. Usually it is not so easy to outsmart Microsoft, but on the other hand,if you are not smarter with computers than the people at MS, you are in trouble, especially with Win 8.

Well, surface sales are weak. We have slow adoption in the PC market and poor sales in the tablet market with the surface. I don't think Microsoft is hitting the mark with this whole "Evolve the industry" thing. I think the consumers are saying, "No thanks."

Windows 8 is an attempt to move so far ahead that Apple is going to get lost behind? At the pace that these OS's (Apple and Microsoft) get released, this is never going to happen. What makes you think that it would?

Strange that some people don't get it.

MS has a giant user base. It might be going down by about 1.3% a year (according to the article ).

It is still a gigantic number 1.5bn allegedly. I have even seen estimates of 2bn.

Dismissing them as dinosaurs or a dying breed is wasting the greatest asset.

Those are the people one should be able to sell your product/services range to . Get them on your side. They are already with you - have been for many years in a lot of cases. "Throwing them under the bus" is not a good idea. Bringing in entriely new customers is not an easy task.

The convertibles only went on sale at the start of February. If by 'Surface' you mean the RT, well.. ya. Everybody was waiting for the convertibles, a product line Apple doesn't even sell. If anything, Apple should probably pay attention to the fact that people turned their nose up at an iPad variant when they knew the convertibles were on the way. That does not bode well for Apple in the future if people realize they can get both a laptop and a tablet in one device, something Apple isn't even anywhere in the zipcode or universe of being able to make.

But If you think the sales of RT mean anything, you're wrong. Everybody was waiting for the Pro. How well the convertibles sell between MS, Lenovo, and Samsung, that will be the deciding factor.

Do you realise the world is changing at a rapid pace, have you ever heard of BYOD, Microsoft is missing out on that as well as a lot of other areas. If Linux has to build a couple of dozen different Distros to keep people happy how do you think Microsoft is going to keep 1.5 billion happy, even with the most minor change.
Nobody is getting thrown under a bus that's just you're interpretation because you're worried Microsoft is trying to make money in a different way.

. . .Stardock releases "ModernMix". . ."Sometime it takes a third party app/program to get what you want."

In the world of Windows (new versions) just give it a couple of months and someone will come up with something to give those who do not like the new version what they are looking for. In this case Modern UI apps can now be used as if it was a desktop program. . .
