Windows 8 Pro price slashed..........

Interesting.

Not at all clear what that is.

Possibly they are trying out another sale to see how it goes - before rolling it out.

You can get still get win 8 Pro upgrade including the media for that online.

I think that is because the retailers couldn't shift them.

Now it appears MS are trialing an official price slash.

Might help a bit, hard to tell.

As far as I know, one has always been eligible to upgrade from the 8 beta/preview versions.

The MS source is suggesting an upgrade from the free Consumer Preview - not sure what is going on here as I thought an upgrade was always from a previously paid for installed product.

I am not sure how much it would help if it was literally free.

The bit about upgrading from CP and I think rp and dp as well was on MS site a long while ago. They just wanted as many as possible to get the thing.

I thought all the Beta (DP, CP and RP) versions have expired and the upgrade requires a legal activated version on the system to qualify for the upgrade.

There is a lot of price slashing on machines carrying win 8 - mind you there was some of that even during the peak buying season as they weren't shifting well even then.

Not much else they can do to try and move the stock.

Just checked - yes. it is being offered to me for that price at MS store UK.

Think the offer is better from Amazon - boxed media included.

Other places have them still at those prices -cclonline, etc.

From the Microsoft Terms and Conditions page:
Each upgrade license applies to only one PC and you can install the upgrade only on PCs that have a valid base license and one of the following operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP (SP3), Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview
I take "valid base licence" to mean you must have had a paid-for copy of Windows on the PC before you installed the preview. Says something similar here too:
Microsoft confirms Windows 8 testers to get $40 upgrade price, too | ZDNet

I don't think the terms have changed since 26 October, just the price.

But it's bizarre that a Windows 8 upgrade is over twice the price of a Windows 8 Pro upgrade.

They are trying to increase Windows 8 appeal to the business market.

It's a sure sign that adoption of Windows 8 in that section of the market is below expectations. Windows 8 is still being seen as the new Vista and I don't think they are going to be able to shake that for a while. It needs a service pack released that is called the business user service pack that at least adds a start menu and a boot to desktop option. Just that alone I think would do the trick.

Windows 7 does the job. It has the reputation of doing the job. Most already have it and Windows 8 is different enough to add to it the need for training if a company adopts it. As many people here have pointed out, you have to work with Windows 8 for a while to get it. Dumb users just don't get it. I think those opinions often shared here are correct. It's not a simple OS and the business adoption of Windows 8 shows this.

What happens if Windows 8 is rejected by the end users? Would Microsoft ever reconsider the direction they took with Windows 8?

Incidentally I also noticed that when the official upgrade price period ended at the end of January, UK retailers PC World briefly had a period (for a few days in February) where you could buy a boxed Windows 8 Pro upgrade for £45 if you ordered on the web, and £190 if you bought it in store, which presumably very few people did.

But after a very short time they made it £45 online and £50 in store, which I think it's been ever since, although just looking now I notice it's now £50 however you buy it from them.

I guess it's possible that Amazon, PC World etc. stocked up on Windows 8 copies at the original lower price, and since Windows 8 hasn't perhaps been the success Microsoft hoped, they have ample supplies left which they can afford to sell at the lower price, so Microsoft have lowered their price to match - after all why would you buy a download (with no media) from Microsoft for £190 when you can get a boxed version with media for £45 from a nearby store?

Hi there
just goes to show --whatever you buy always WAIT and NEVER pay the original Manufacturers price -- the difference between 190 GBP and 45 GBP seems enormous -- even better value if you pay with EUR / USD due to the quite large drop in the value of GBP against these currencies recently.

Surprised however that the UK seems to have relatively cheap versions of W8 -- my experience with UK is that unless you get the VAT back it's much more expensive than the USA or even surprisingly Germany.

Cheers

Yes, it has often been very expensive in the UK. Even excluding VAT.

I understand some folk fly to NY with empty suitcases, stock up jeans, cd's, gadgets, presents, whatever, have a day or two in Ny - and still save over what they would have paid in UK for those items.

Curious situation with 8. Is it just a UK thing? There doesn't seem to be much interest in 8 here - or any of the devices carrying it. That is putting it extremely politely. Revulsion would be another way of putting it.

I still haven't seen a win 8 tablet or lappie in the wild. Plenty of non windows devices to be seen on tubes etc.

I don't know anybody who has a windows phone, either. There was one who used to have a win 7 phone - or whatever they were called. He doesn't have one now.

Maybe.

Those at Amazon and elsewhere still hanging around will already be included in win 8 sales figures.

If they want to try and add anything to the figures, they will have to at least match the price.

It could take a while for all the stock to be got rid of - more the machines than the boxed product, perhaps.

Not great for the margins of the oems or the retailers. Oems were concerned this would happen.

I think it's as per my earlier post - legally you need a "valid base licence" to upgrade, which I assume means you need a paid-for copy of XP/Vista/7.

On a technical level I guess when the upgrade installer is checking for an earlier version, it treats the two types of Preview as valid, presumably so that people who over-wrote their installation of XP or whatever with a Preview don't have to go back and install XP to get the released version to work.

Hi there
Maybe Ms is going down the subscription route so by virtually "Giving" away the OS they hope they will recoup by sales of hardware (Tablets etc) and licensed software subscriptions such as Office 365 or products from the store. Strip everything out of the OS (in future) and make users pay for everything that's now included as standard.

Amazon took this route with its Kindles -- virtually GIVE away the hardware - and users will download a lot more e-books --which does seem to be happening.

Cheers
