Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest...

Is because consumers view the surface as a tablet rather than a pc and tablet OS's don't eat up that much space for the OS. They expect that kind of loss on a desktop or laptop.

I loved hearing about how little space the 64gb unit had free. I would ask them, would you buy a 64gb SSD as the only drive in your desktop and they would say " no, that wouldn't be big enough". Well, there you go. Same issue.

slightly OT - but with the price of 256 GB SSD's now --much cheaper than even 1 year ago --why on earth would the Surface pro not have a 256GB SSD in it as standard.

If it were me selling these things I'd save a bit on having a slightly less powerful CPU and a 256 GB SSD - probably could sell it for the same price as the I7 with 64 GB SSD.

Those tablets are glued down and you cannot perform any hardware upgrades on your own. We already know this from another article.

So if you want a good spec-ed surface pro or any other good small tablet pc, get one with 4GB RAM preinstalled and the CPU of your choice because they cannot be replaced afterwards. Of course 256GB storage is a go if the price lets you get it.

But like everyone else, the plan is to release version 1, sell as many as you can, and then replace with version 2 down the road with the 256 version.

256 gig of storage would make me a little more interested in buying one. Problem is It's still a bit overpriced for my budget. It looks like glue is cheaper and faster than using screws so that leaves the do it your self upgrades out of the question.

That's irrelevant, your average consumer has no clue what the storage layout between the two devices means. Most consumers don't do their own research and rely on reviews to see which product suits them. Rather than spreading FUD like the tech blogs enjoy to do with Microsoft they should educate the consumer on the differences of the devices. Tech blogs will bash the Surface Pro then steer consumers to an iPad with 128GB storage, which makes no sense, or to a similar device like the MacBook Air or other ultrabook with the same "issue".

I was just looking at my desktop and my Windows 8 takes up 60GB. That includes all my programs like Office 2010, a few Steam games and a lot of misc programs. All my data files, video and pictures are on a separate drive. So for me a 128GB SSD would work great and still have another 60GB for any data I needed to bring with me. And there is always external USB drives if I needed to bring everything I have, but don't see that happening. It all depends on your personal needs, so the Surface Pro with 128GB will fit a lot of peoples needs. It won't replace my desktop but that's not its mission.
