I suppose you could take your chances with Apple, maybe a nice $3000 glued together Notebook. Or maybe a phone that cost less than $200 to build for $800. Maybe a .50c cable for $29.

They make more money off of Android licensing fees that they do from windows 8 mobile phone...

Locked in hardware and locked in software, that's why I want Microsoft to succeed, I build my own computers, although even that might go by the wayside the way things are going.

I have installed a copy of Mint on an old laptop just to do that BUT the way M$ is going with secure boot that may not be a way either.

That is a potential problem.

At least until the "hackers" release their methods for disabling it.

Linux Mint is quite nice.
All of my devices (monitor, USB TV dongle, On-board sound & network) worked straight "out of the box".

No, MS is not declining or flat lined. It is on the rise. I think that once the 8 train across multiple devices gets rolling faster, it'll be a real moneymaker.

I'm looking forward to what Jimbo may say of all this. He seems to know his stuff on markets. He stated in another thread that it matters on how much a company profits, but more importantly how investors see the future of it, which is what the article linked in yours about iFruit company earnings.

It appears that Wall Street is still suffering from an Apple hangover.

Apple yesterday posted its fiscal first-quarter results and got hammered for it. Now it's the morning after, and investors are continuing to run for the hills. Shares are down more than 10 percent to $460.76, wiping nearly $50 billion off of its market value.

The results themselves weren't bad. In fact, they were quite good: record sales of iPhones and iPads, nearly $55 billion in revenue and $13.4 billion in profit.

But investors aren't looking at how Apple did, and instead are more interested in how it will do. It's here where the legitimate concerns of slowing growth begin to pop up. In particular, a new policy on a supposedly more accurate estimate range for revenue suggests that Apple won't be blowing away its projected numbers in the coming quarters.

It's surprising how many people have dumped Ubuntu and moved over to Mint. I wonder if that has anything to do with Canonical not listening to what it's users want and have gone their own way with the interface etc?

MICROSOFT said its profit dipped slightly from a year earlier but posted record revenues in the past quarter, getting a lift from sales of its new Windows 8 operating system.

Profit dipped 3.7 percent from 12 months ago to $6.38 billion, better than most forecasts, while revenues rose 2.7 percent to $21.46 billion, a record for the US tech giant.

Microsoft said the boost in revenues came from pre-sales and upgrades of Windows 8, recognized in the quarter, and gains in business software and other segments.

Clearly the extremely low introductory prices for Windows 8 and licence sales to vendors and manufacturers has helped sales (revenue (up) is not profit (down)), but whether that will be sustained from February onwards will be interesting.

I follow it purely out of curiosity, to see where it's going (had a boss like that once).

I have to ask though, apple's revenue was similar to about Q1 of 2009 I believe, and yet their profit this time isn't much more than last quarter, I think. What's with that?

What was just a whisper of doubt last summer is turning into full blown concern. For example, an over the top article about apple I read today was suggesting they may go the way of RIM. As much as I'D like to see that, that won't happen anytime soon realistically. But, considering apple's past when it comes to software and hardware innovations, it has a tendency to dry up. Look at their mac lineup, all they do year after year is either a) make it thinner/lighter, b) add a Retina display, or c) make the software look more suited for grandparents or new technology users in general. Leather stitching on a screen? This is disgusting. Reel to reel tape player for podcast playback? My dad used to pirate music with that, DECADES ago. Seeing as that's been the trend for apple, I do believe there is actual concern for the future of ios and related devices. It seems though, they're taking one of MANY pages out of Microsoft's latest design book and applying that poorly on ios; which ends up causing UI fragmentation within the software and is concerning considering apple is known for consistency. But nonetheless.

When I think of productivity and entertainment, I think of Microsoft. So far, there is literally nothing that is taking the wind away from Office right now, either the software, subscription service, or online apps. Windows is STILL the standard in the enterprise literally everywhere. The Xbox is still the console of choice and the most popular one for gaming. They're innovating and redesigning and making things more integrated with their products, which is VERY good. In the future with all their products tightly integrated, a Windows Phone would be more desirable in the enterprise in an already Windows based environment. An Xbox would be more desired if you use Windows and/or Windows Phone, let alone all the other products and services they offer that are getting better integrated.
