Windows 8 already at build 8006, but it means nothing

The Windows enthusiast community is getting really excited because Windows 8 build numbers have passed the 8000 mark. We want to remind everyone that unless evidence shows otherwise, this currently means absolutely nothing.

Twitter user MSFTtm is one of the many users keeping us in the loop on Microsoft's latest work on Windows 8. Yesterday, he claimed that the last build he knew of, build 8006, was compiled at 6:55PM, on May 13, 2011. His messages show that the build number passed the 8000 mark somewhere between April 29, 2011 and May 12, 2011:
Last Windows 8 winmain build: 6.2.7996.0.winmain.110429-1810
Last Windows 8 build: 6.2.8005.winmain.110512-1726
Last Windows 8 build: 6.2.8006.0.winmain.110513-1855

The pre-Beta phase will come when the current M3 phase ends. That is assuming, of course, that MS don't decide to have M4 in which case it will probably be when that ends. As regards build number, that will depend on the number of builds required between now and the time that MS decide that it is time for the Beta version. The build number will probably be rounded, so my guess (based on the fact that 8006, which is an M3 build, has already been compiled) will be 8100 or even 8200. We will just have to wait and see.
