Windows 8 uncertainty blamed for decline in PC sales

or the first time in five years, PC shipments over the holiday shopping season were lower than the year before - and IDC is blaming Windows 8.

The research firm says that a hoped-for boost to sales from the new operating system failed to materialize, contributing to fourth quarter sales down by 6.4 percent, 4.5 percent in the US.

"Although the third quarter was focused on the clearing of Windows 7 inventory, preliminary research indicates the clearance did not significantly boost the uptake of Windows 8 systems in Q4," says Jay Chou, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker.

When you get stories like this in the Wall Street Journal it's little wonder some people might be put off a bit.

If you're thinking of upgrading your PC to the new Windows 8, be prepared for hassles and disappointment, especially if the computer is more than a year or two old—even if it technically meets the basic requirements to run the new version.

I know this, because I've spent big chunks of the past week trying to upgrade to Windows 8 two big-name, well-regarded PCs—a 2008 Lenovo laptop and a 2009 Hewlett-Packard HPQ -0.74% touch-screen desktop. The process was painful, and it resulted in lost capabilities, even though both PCs ran Windows 7 quite well and met the minimum requirements for running Windows 8

I installed Windows 8 on a 4 year old Netbook in less than an hour, even putting in some missing chipset drivers.

I installed Windows 8 on my Acer Aspire A0722 netbook with a dual core 1GHZ processor and 2 GB of ram. I installed it on Oct. 26th when I got Windows 8 and I have had no problems. In fact, it runs quicker and is more responsive than Windows 7 Home Premium.

Yeah, this had nothing to do with Win8.

But, if the OEM's and Microsoft get out good hardware and a great message, then it will take off in 2013.
But it's all on them to get it done. They are the ones who will ultimately make or break Win8 and the Windows Tablet Market.

And I agree with Bill,,, I for one don't believe a word of that quote you gave.
Either the reporter has no clue what they are doing, or they just wanted to bash Win8.
Either way, they need to stop and seek help.

Incidentally, I have Win8 running on a 6 year old Desktop. See Specs
Been playing Max Payne 3, Dishonored, FallOut 3 (which does crash, but that is the games fault,, did the same since day one and is a known issue for everyone since it came out, but it is playable once it gets started proper, game issue, not a Windows issue)
and many others, including Dead Island (which is another crash fest of a game due to horrible porting to PC)

I'd have to agree. I also feel that many of these people are realising that they never actually had the need for a powerful machine in the first place, so aren't replacing them with another desktop/powerful laptop, but are embracing the tablet concept. And that's OK. But the market for full-function powerful PCs won't go away, although it will stabilise. Just as with Coke Robot's televisions.

. . .as some have already said, "Can you say iPad or tablet."

No one OS is causing computers sells to tank. With the focus at the present time being directed toward tablets/pads the good old desktop/laptop computers are becoming a thing of the past. When tablets first hit the market they needed to have PCs to bring them up to date, however over the past two years that has changed, hence there is no need to have the mighty desktop taking up space.

Now that doesn't mean desktop systems are seeing their final days; it just means there are people out there who fine a need for them going the way of the "Buggy Whip."

I have to partially agree, the OS is not really hurting sales all that much. Most people realize that they can do everything that they need to do with what they already have, and in this economic climate everyone is keeping ther spending at a minimum.

But, I do believe that 8 is somewhat to blame because Microsoft has not made any effort to tell us what 8 will do for us that 7 cannot. They are selling an image, but there is no meat behind it. I tried 8 and was appaled at its lack of functionality. Everything takes twice as long to do, ONCE you figure out how to do it. And then, after that long learning curve, you find out that you have a less robust, less efficient, and harder to use interface. Microsoft removed all of the features of 7 that power users find helpful. You dont GAIN anything from going to 8, so why are people going to go out and get a new PC to try it out.

I know that Microsoft HAD to come out with Something to keep their revenue stream going, but this looks like an OS that two highschool kids sitting in their bedroom came up with over a long weekend.

What I think we are seeing here is computers are evolving like the country doctors of old . You still go to a GP for advice then he sends you to a specialist. As Lee said about the Buggy Whip in some parts of the country they are still in use and are not going away. Most people using tablets do not need a desktop for there needs if all they want to do is check email surf the web and play a few simple games before the tablet or smart phone that was not possible. If the desktop disappears then who will develop the APPs they will want.

Most desktop machines became obsolete before they broke some still in use and some were upgraded numerous times. I know we changed out my mother-in-law's Win95 desktop last year to Win7 laptop she is 91 years old.
There is no way to upgrade smart phones and tablets when the hardware becomes obsolete they are throwaway devices and most have batteries that are not user replaceable so when the battery goes the device is replaced.

Win 8 was a step in the right direction for windows on tablets, and for people that dont use their desktops for much more than a few programs and surfing the web. But for technical computing and business use, MS missed the boat altogether. They are abandoning the accumulated expertise of their existing user base for an attempt to compete with Apple and Google in the Tablet market.

The latest thing is for people to get tablets, but except for people who never needed PC's in the first palce, tablets are not going to replace PC's but rather augment them. I have both an iPad and an Android tablet, but they are both lightyears away from even coming close to doing what I or anyone in my company need to do on a PC. In the meantime, I need an OS that actually allows me to fully use my PC, and does not bind me down to doing everything through "tablet vision".

But, there are alternatives, and people are using them successfully and they are proven stable.
One of those is ClassicShell.

So you still have a choice.

Should you have to use this? Well, yes and no.

Since Win8 is designed the way it is, (right or wrong, this is a matter of extreme opinion) then if you find it easier to have something like ClassicShell, then the answer is Yes.

At least you have that choice. they could have blocked it, and/or other software from putting the start menu back, but they (MS) didn't.

They could have designed a better GUI overall for both Tablet and PC. But they didn't and therefore we need to work with what we have.

Win8 is still better in many ways than Win7 (not to say Win7 is bad, it's not, but it is dated, Remember, XP was supposed to retire in about 2005)

Do people have to upgrade to Win8? No.

But, there are benefits, and they aren't bad ones, people just need to realize what those are, and they have been pointed out ad nauseam, the problem is, many people have an extreme bias towards MS, and others just can't get passed the new GUI.

Even using just the New GUI is not difficult, nor is it any more time consuming. It really is just a bit different.
If people took the time without bias and without the whole (i didn't do it this way before) attitude to actually learn new ways of using their desktop,, they might find it's better.

I've used Windows 8 Pro since it came out and before that I was using the Release Preview. I have Start8 installed on my taskbar. Most of my programs are Win32 so I stay in the desktop most of the time. However, I have apps like my bank app, mail, Netflix, etc. in Metro and it's just a window key press away. I have my live tiles arranged, so that when I pop into Metro, I can see my information at a glance. I'm sure when the apps improve in the Store I will be using more of them.

When we think of tablets we don't think of them as being a productive choice for a computer. Why? Because we can't see them doing an Excel spreadsheet, a Word document, nor doing a Quicken account, albeit you can. Almost all the new tablets will allow you to do any one of these (except readers). You can do just about any thing (except large games) on a tablet. A of course you may not have Quicken, Microsoft office, or an Adobe product, however, with the huge choice of apps that shouldn't be a problem.

So, a great deal of the people throughout the world are discovering the tablet/iPad, and because of this we are see a decline in desktop/laptop computers. Personally I like both worlds. I like the idea of being able to stream videos to my new 70" LED HD TV using my computer. I like the idea of being able to use my iPad to read, and to maintain my check book while on the go. However, smart TVs, smart phones, and smart tablets, etc are the wave of the future, thus either you accept it, or get left behind.

Exactly,, and what people also fail to realize is the Win8 Pro Tablets that will let you run any desktop software. not just Apps.
The functionality of Tablets is about to change in a big way. And iPad/Android won't be able to compete in this new market once Win8 Pro Tablets are fully realized. Sorry, but they won't.

I am speaking directly of Hybrids and Transformers that can have the keyboard etc removed and used as a true tablet. Not Touch Laptops or Touch Ultrabooks.

Also concider the ability to connect them to a larger monitor with USB mouse and Keyboard combo (wireless or bluetooth) and you could have a desktop replacement with the power that is expected, (i5 Processors etc)

Which brings things back to..... "And iPad/Android won't be able to compete in this new market once Win8 Pro Tablets are fully realized. Sorry, but they won't."
