Improved sharing & new HTML5 features for SkyDrive.com

We’re ringing in the new year with a few improvements to SkyDrive.com. You now have a single, unified view into how each of your files is shared so you can more easily control who has access to your files. We’ve also added more HTML5 features for touch devices making the SkyDrive experience faster and more fluid across devices and we’ve introduced more drag-and-drop capabilities to make it easier to manage your files, photos and documents.

If you loose Internet connection you don't necessarily lose your files. It depends how you use it. I use a combination of SkyDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox, they sync folders on my desktop and laptop and server. I have a local copy on each machine and a backup in the cloud. I do need an Internet connection to access the cloud drives with my iPad but if I know I will need a document I can download it so it is available locally later.

It's a very seamless way of working, previously I would set up a VPN to my home/office server and use mapped drives to copy files into the cloud makes it automatic and simple.

You do loose your files in theory (until you fix the connection) be it for a short time.
Having also a offline backup saves the day in this scenario.

But if the offline backup fails due to dying HDD, the cloud storage will save the day. Just a thought.
I just don't use cloud and I also have slow internet speed.

You save to local drive that then syncs to the cloud storage. Even if you go offline you still have that local copy, but to sync back from the cloud to a local drive on another machine you will need to be online on that machine. Your files are never lost but they may not all be in sync unless all devices are online.

Because external HDDs are so inexpensive I have two for back purposes. One is kept in the glove box of my truck and the other in a safe in my house (fire and water proof), hence still unable to see any need for the Cloud.

Yes I find a cloned drive is the best backup to date even if the boot drive is hosed but still good you can clone it back to a boot able system and not take all day to reinstall.

On cloud:

Your data will probably be split between a bunch of servers worldwide on random locations and disks... I don't like the idea if you put it this way.

HDD in a box as well. :thumb: And it's more energy-saving this way.

The Cloud to me is a place to safeguard my 100 plus years of family, special event photographs that will be passed on to my kids.

How often have people lost photographs (paper or digital) over the years, I for one had many HD failures in the early digital age and kids misplacing photos, to loose so many memories at my stage in life is a crime.

This is the best 25gb of future proofing for me....

Who better to safe guard your data than Microsoft.... My view......:orb::orb:

It's fine as long as it's reliable enough and it works. :D
It will take a long time till I'm convinced that cloud is better than local storage (for personal usage not business).
But depends what "better" means in the first place. In terms of: reliability, access speed, availability, scalability...

I'm not gonna point this to Microsoft, Google and others that provide cloud storage, but I've seen some example servers and the basic hardware quality: for me, my own computers are better IMO. Treated with care, I know exactly where my drives are. I don't expect this to be the choice for the average man.
But in a cloud you don't even know exactly where your files are. They are there, virtually, when you click on them.

Here follows my view on the situation, it should be self-explanatory. :)

This is Bessy in grandma's field:
cow-d4y1.jpg
Compare her with the local disk in your computer, or your good ol' external disk.
You know the location, the contents, file-system and OS.

And this is industrial cow farming, just a small cluster from the whole pack:
Cows-at-diary-farm-006.jpg
Compare this with the storage drives in cloud servers.
Can be anywhere, mostly on cheap locations, mass-production is the key.

So, where is your data actually? South America, India, US... or split across all locations...
Don't really care because it's there when you need it! Right?

Everyone uses what he trusts or works best for them. I just added my view on the matter.
I don't trust the cloud with sensitive data but I use it for general purposes since it found its way in all daily services (it's omnipresent).

Cheers
Hopachi

Redundancy, resiliency, replication, load balancing, distributed architecture, multiple servers, multiple disk arrays, a data centre has all of that plus fire protection, UPS etc , controlled environmental conditions, the cloud then replicates that across multiple data centres in geographically diverse centres so protecting against a local natural disaster.
Your files are safer in the cloud than they are on your little black box. It has its place, I use one too for system images, I also backup to my own server, which backs up to a little black box, but my failsafe is cloud storage. A hdd can go phut anytime. Your files distributed and replicated across multiple secure and resilient data centres are far safer than on local storage.

Nice post... and I admit, it's true.
That's why a price is also included (per used GB mostly).

Since I have simple data, and know my backups, I'm not afraid of data loss.
In the end, every man to his backup system.

As an Englishman I do not understand your reference to Maddison Avenue, other than knowing it is a thoroughfare in New York, I fail to see its relevance to distributed storage. Your quaint Americanisms baffle me I am afraid.
