Windows 8 discounts end in three weeks

Price of Windows 8 Pro upgrade may quintuple after Jan. 31

Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro upgrade discount will expire in about three weeks, at which point the company will triple or even quintuple the current price of the new operating system, according to several online retailers.

On Friday, Microsoft reminded customers that a different upgrade deal will expire Jan. 31 -- one that lets purchasers of new Windows 7 PCs acquire Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 -- but made no mention of the same deadline for an upgrade from Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 on older PCs.

That discount, also set to end Jan. 31, prices a download upgrade to Windows 8 Pro at $39.99, or $69.99 for a DVD.

It might be worth buying one for £25.

Not because it is any use as is.

However, you could then use that £25 purchase as a sacrifice if MS ever come up with something worth upgrading to.

It would be a gamble.

If MS persist on their present path - they will never release another decent o/s.

The other downside is that would add to their sales figures.

We don't want to encourage MS .

Hi SIW2, What an appallingly negative comment.
Windows 8 is fast and an improvement in a number of ways over W7. For those willing to spend a little time setting-up the Start Page it creates a considerable improvement over the Start Button. I accept that the Metro Apps are controversial and I personally retain and use only a very small number. However for those that like them and find them of use it adds another dimension to the OS.
I see the contributor lists their OS as Windows 7; alright a good OS and if they like it then stay with it but please don't decry something just because you don't like it. Stay with Windows 7 Forums and don't fret about it. Windows 8 is and certainly at the offer price at bargain.

It is actually quite optimistic.

I think there is some hope that MS will desist from trying to force users into their new business model.

I am guessing with the slow (slower than Vista) uptake at the reduced price, MS will decide to maintain the reduced price.
