Double-speed USB 3.0 to arrive next year

Computing industry powers are doubling the data-transfer speed of USB 3.0 from today's 5 gigabits per second rate to 10Gbps.

The move will uncork speed bottlenecks of external SSD storage devices, open up options such second monitors, and help confine the even faster Thunderbolt interface to a high-end niche.

But it won't happen immediately. The specification should be done in mid-2013, which "will enable initial products to appear in late 2014 with a much broader availability of products in 2015," according to the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, which announced the faster Universal Serial Bus work today at the CES show.

Wait.....

Does this mean EXISTING PCs with USB 3 will be receiving an updated chipset controller or something to enable those ports to achieve their actual throughput or does this mean there's a USB 3 revision that will be only be exploited by newer hardware?

Don't quote me on this, but from what I have been reading it appears it is going to be a driver update.

Hence the reason that I absolutely HATE the term "futureproofing". It just makes no sense whatsoever. I've only got a couple of devices that have USB 3.0 and I don't use it for high speed stuff anyway....my boxes have eSata and that's what I use for my large external transfers.

That requires the [DEL]probably[/DEL] new modified frequencies and voltages only available in newer hardware.

So, new drivers alone won't help, you needs new devices.

Yes, what I meant was your current USB 3 device will work (at the lower speed) in the new USB 3 port. Just like a USB 2 device will run at lower speed in the current USB 3 ports.

My question is though, is there actually any devices that even come close to running at the current USB 3 speeds? How bad do you want or need it? A Solid State SATA drive in an enclosure might come close but how many people actually own one? It's not big on my must have list. lol, I don't even have a USB 3 port on my motherboard. My next build will likely have one but it'll be a while before I personally have anything that can use it.

Good question.
But maybe they increase the speed because is possible and doesn't require too much change. That way they can sleep well the years that follow. :)

It's a limit that's moved even higher. I compare it with ipv4 to ipv6 or x32 to x64 changes.

I have a USB3.0 port on my tablet and when I copy the hard drive image to another drive using a USB disk dock (USB2.0), the operation goes much, much, faster than when using the USB2.0 port on the tablet (I keep an updated image on a second drive all the time). The same applies when I want to transfer data from a thumb drive, the process is much faster.

Hi there
some people will always want faster and faster -- do you remember a few years ago we had totally INSANE CD (What's a CD -anybody these days actually use them!!) speeds of up to 100X. In fact I remember a science fiction novel where a serial killer used a computer to murder his victims.

He loaned them a computer with the CD capable of running at these ridiculously fast speeds which had a slightly warped CD in it which had a few of jagged edges so it looked sort of like those Chinese / Korean Crosses that the kung fu fighters throw at their victims..

At boot up time the CD would fly out of the slot at awesome speed and separate the victims head from his neck with one quick clean slice !!.:dinesh:

There's always a use for newer and faster devices even though the end use might not be exactly as the designer / inventor intended it for.
Copying large volumes of data between different devices -- could certainly use faster, smaller and larger capacity devices.

The Cloud is not an option for me -- and in any case with the increasing use of ISP "Capping" data usage I'm not going to attempt to store 50 TB of data on the cloud - especially with current ISP upload speeds. Fibre optic is great for theoretical 100 mbs but upload will only get you a FRACTION of that.

Local fast devices I could always use - with some rare exceptions --such as the above "CD weapon".

Cheers

Hi there
Even after a tax rise or two we've had here that costs MORE than my Mortgage and car payments combined by quite a margin.
(We just let some of our big banks go bust -- short term pain but at least the country is coming out of recession with a 3 - 3.5% growth rate and almost zero debt as a % of GDP. -- Other countries should have done the same rather than feeding the Banks absolutely TRILLIONS of dollars. Iceland of course is a small economy - but you could have let a few Banks go bust -- then gov't had more money over to kick start the economy again).

Will stick to what I've got for the moment. I don't have too many issues with USB3. I'm sure at the appropriate time I'll get USB 974 or whatever it's called by then with a 2 PB /sec data transfer rate ( 2 * 1000 TB) on to my 2 mm super micro SD card which has a capacity of 1 EB (1000 * 1PB = 1000 * 1000 TB !!).

Seriously there really is always an eventual need for faster data transfer rates. - These days we think nothing of even watching HD movies direct from the Internet without even downloading first.

Even a couple of years ago this would have been impossible -- re-buffering etc -- and who on this Forum remember the old dial up connections usinh Hayes Modems with what we thought at the time was a really fast speed of 2400 Baud. !!!

For the youngsters here who never experienced those days

Modem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I even used an acoustic coupler -- this is where you just put the telephone handset into two rubber cups on a modem and hey presto you got a connection (although even slower -- 300 - 1200 Baud !!).

Here are some images.

Those were the days !!!!

Most will not get double speed anyway...there are bottlenecks in many cases

There are more variables...HDD speed, mainstream motherboard, & controllers, etc too.... StandardUSB 3.0 is good enough for me...maybe not others?

I can not miss what I never had

BTW: Brink...Thanks for the thread...good update info

You could move to Lafayette, LA they offer a Gibit fiber connection both ways and get faster transfer speeds than your HDD. A bit pricey $1000.00 per month.

Hi there
Even after a tax rise or two we've had here that costs MORE than my Mortgage and car payments combined by quite a margin.

I even used an acoustic coupler -- this is where you just put the telephone handset into two rubber cups on a modem and hey presto you got a connection (although even slower -- 300 - 1200 Baud !!).

Here are some images.

Those were the days !!!!

I remember those days I ran a two line BBS for 5 years in the days of AOL.
