Windows 8 market share jumped in December

December was a good month for Microsoft's new operating system, with Windows 8's market share leapfrogging Linux to claim the number seven spot.

Data released by Web metric firm Net Applications shows that over the course of December the Windows 8 market share grew to 1.72 percent, up from 1.09 percent in November.

The leap in market share puts Windows 8 ahead of Linux, but behind Mac OS X 10.8, OS X 10.7, and OS X 10.6, and far behind Windows 7, Windows XP, and even Windows Vista.

December wasn't just good for Windows 8, with Windows 7 also seeing a small bump in market share, up from 44.71 percent to 45.11 percent. This was to be expected as December is usually a good month for PC sales thanks to the holiday season.

In related news, the Department of Defense bought about 600 million dollars of new Microsoft products, including Windows 8 and Office 2013.

I feel safe already.
I like your innovative sense of humor Cokey! :D

And you're right to feel safe!

Because it was leaked from a source inside the CIA that Windows 8 is the new secret weapon of the Armed Services.

Clandestine agents are surreptiously dumping large shipments of W8 to their enemies' armed forces ...

to totally bork their entire defense system and internet!

You know, you can use a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone as a hammer. I read that apparently, the DoD chose Microsoft for their mobile offerings. So in theory, US troops could be packing Lumia 920s as standard gear, not for the phone itself, but to inflict some blunt damage on enemies. :)

Mess with Windows Phone, you get hit on the head.

Well from our user point of view is a good choice, Win8 being the most secure Windows ever, and I guess you agree on this one.

You know that year of Linux? Ain't happening this year...

I've been writing software for 36 years and this "Year of Linux" has been threatening to happen for the last 20! They'll probably be forecasting it for the next 20, too!

Headline in Decmber 2030: "Windows 35 just released featuring holographic 'live tiles' Linux pushing the outside of the envelope with 1.001% market share, up a full thousandth since 2012 - declares 2031 'The Year of Linux'"

Yeah yeah ...

Good call Hopachi. This thread is rageing! :dinesh: Getting better with every post!

Win7 sky-rocketed to fame after the burn and crash of Vista.

With W8 doing an exemplar roman candle a la Vista style, if the pattern holds true, and the degree of swing of the pendulum to the positive side equals the swing to the negative side by W8, then Windows 9 should be an all time meteoric success!

It's the thrill and suspense that matters. That thrill is there every year.

Remember this one? in 1999 was the end of the world.... then 2012... then they'll come up with another date soon. For the same sort of thrill and suspense of course.

@Hopachi. :D

And good afternoon to the good ol' US of A; and depending on which part of Europe you're in, (my son is in Brussels visiting his girl friend, where it's approx 10:22 pm), it's good evening Europe!

Fact is I'm not an early riser. I've been up all night, when anyone with any common sense would be sleeping, so I should probably be seeing a therapist for my computer addiction!

Yep, we are looking forward to it.

Year of Linux?

Not as a desktop o/s certainly - however, they do fine in the server market, and over 60% of the smartphone market is a great success.

I don't know if there will be a truly viable Linux alternative as a full sclle o/s.

It's not impossible. Now Google and the oem's know the public are buying android in huge numbers - they might just get their act together and finally there will be a true alternative.

Folk from the Linux Foundation have been running ubuntu and it's variants on tablets for a long while. Apparently it is excellent on a nexus.

If they can produce something with a greater depth of ui and less hobgoblin, it would sell very well, and release the oem's from the burden of relying on one supplier.

Wow, it's a small world! :what:

My son sent me photos of he and his girlfriend standing in front of the huge Christmas tree made out of illuminated square blocks. Very impressive. They have just come back from a stint in Vienna.

Actually I'd been waiting for my son to SKYPE me, and after finishing, decided to check the forum out before retiring.

So I'll bid you good night and sleep well. Bye the bye, iin Perth WA, we've just had our worst heat wave since 1942, with temperatures peaking over 42 degrees Celsius. And my son says it's been minus 3 to 4 degrees in Brussels. Lucky him.

Cheers M :D

If that happens it would be the best news I've heard since the inception of the modern PC.

It's almost unheard of in ths day and age for such a gigantic industry, and one of such importance, that there has been no real competitor in the PC field. And that one company has held a monopoly for so long. High time for a change.

Competition is the life blood of providing consumers with the best product at the best price.

So here's hoping! :thumb:

Yes it is: round ball with 12000km, better say 7400miles in diameter.

We NEED to add Mars to the collection soon. :)

Nice! Once you get to Europe it's pretty easy to jump to many locations and see a bunch of stuff espcially on Christmas and New Year.
