Windows 8 Secrets: Welcome Screen

In the first of what will be a long series of co-posts unveiling specific new Windows 8 features, we present the new Windows 8 Welcome screen. This is based, quite clearly, on the Windows Phone 7 lock screen and is just as attractive. This new Welcome screen is only partially configurable, from what we can tell so far: You can only change the background image. The display includes the time, day of week, the date (month and day), and icons for power management (for portable machines only) and ease of access. Perhaps more will be added or present on other device types in the future.

That looks quite nice, in fact. IMO it's a good idea to have clock and calendar on the lock / logon screen.

I'll also agree

It does look very nice, I'm guessing you could also change the background of the Welcome Screen? I would like to see it built-into Windows 8 instead of like Windows 7 which is in group policy or a registry edit.

Yeah I saw that. Paul Thurrott also posts on ZDNet and is usually pretty reliable. Also it makes sense to add continuity across their desktop and mobile platforms.

can't think of anything else right now.
The rumor with Windows 8 is that there will be multiple interfaces that will
adjust to the device it is running on.

Also it makes sense to add continuity across their desktop and mobile
platforms.

Yes, I think it's the logical way to go.

Funny! I like the clock and calendar too, and apparently the background image will be changeable. But having to click on Control/Alt/Delete to proceed. . . that can't be right?

The logon screen seems rather. . .unappealing to me, but I do like the idea of the clock and date though.
