How and why Gmail and Chrome crashed yesterday

I noticed the gmail outage, but didn't have any problems with Chrome even though I do use the sync feature.

The gmail outage was quite noticeable since it practically never happens. Even though it may have left millions of corporate customers without email for 40 minutes, the overall uptime is likely much higher than any of those corporate customers would have ever been able to achieve with their own email systems.

Really? Gmail has been available to the public since Feb 2007, we've had Exchange running since Oct 2006 and have had 0 (That's Zero) downtime. That includes an upgrade to Exchange 2010 from 2003 that we did with live migrations, that's NO downtime to the user during migration.

Your Exchange server has not had 1 single outage since 2006? Come on, seriously that's nearly impossible to believe. Never had an update that required a reboot. Never had to take a database offline to run a repair or an offline defrag? Never had a drive run out of space and have Exchange services stop.

Who runs one Exchange server?
Tons of businesses. I'd bet more companies run a single server than companies with cluster setups with multiple servers.

So you're comparing GMail service to poor Exchange setups that don't use clusters or DAGs? If that's the comparison you are making then GMail's outage is much worse considering it has redundancy and global mail farms to support its users and they had an outage. I'm not saying it's impossible to have outages even in the cloud but lets compare apples to apples shall we?

With 2003 we were clustered but our 2010 is running fully virtualized in VMWare and with it's DAG setup it's been even easier to maintain.

Yup, that's exactly what I am comparing. The most basic of all gmail accounts get a very high level of redundancy and as a result offers extremely high up times overall. Many business customers wouldn't achieve this level of uptime in their own managed systems...and hence the reason they have outsourced their email in the first place. I don't think millions of customers were really up in arms about this 40 minutes of downtime.
