Rumor: Microsoft preparing 3 new Surface tablets for 2013

If the claims are true, we'll be seeing 8.6-inch, 11.6-inch, and 14.6-inch models available sometime next year.

Despite signs that its Surface tablets haven't yet set the world on fire, sales-wise, Microsoft appears to be moving full-speed ahead on plans to expand its lineup in 2013 with models of varying screen size, including a whopping 14.6-inch version.

According to MS Nerd, who has proven accurate in past leaks of Microsoft plans, the computing giant has a trio of new Surface slates in the works, including a "Mini" model. While not as small as an iPad mini, this Surface RT supposedly comes with an 8.6-inch screen and uses a Qualcomm processor rather than an Nvidia Tegra one.

What's really peaking my interest is the rumored AMD APU for the Surface Pro 2, which has better graphics power, which is best for Windows 8 with its apps and everything else on the high end of Desktop software.

Also, an 11 inch screen sounds REAL nice, probably the real sweet spot for a tablet PC. This is making me wait it out for a year on purchasing a Surface tablet, since I don't have a legitimate for one until a year from now.

+1 to that, being an AMD fan I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those for a look see. I likely can't afford any of them on my limited income but it's still nice to know there are options. Pricing will as always be interesting.

And ARM processor in an AMD APU....well then that WILL be an Advanced Processing Unit!

I don't know, it sounds iffy. They would have to develop it as a hybrid unit, where it's function is mostly ARM (for battery life) and turning on the x86 half to run Desktop software and shut off or sleep afterwards. Seems interesting....

Is it me, or are the ipad mini commercials basically insinuating that you have to buy a full sized ipad, and THEN buy an ipad mini to take good advantage of it? I don't get why they'd make commercials showing the ipad mini, is just a mini ipad. It's in the name....

the ARM in the upcoming AMD chip is for security purposes, not as a general processor.

an AMD chip would be really interesting in this field because that's what iPads and other tablets do. they pair a strong GPU with a weak CPU.

any x64 class AMD CPU would wipe the floor with any ARM processor and the AMD GPU would also kill. it's just curious why AMD can't compete in this field. the most likely reason is AMD cannot subsidize this area like how Intel subsidizes the low end market with their high end products.

aren't amd going to be integrating arm architechture on their dye as well as the x86 from next year as well?

read that somewhere...can't remember where now.

AMD can go down the ARM processing route if they felt like it, an ARM chip with a Radeon graphics chip, THAT would be a neat Windows 8 RT device!

I don't think Intel really subsidizes so much for lower end hardware, they just use the Pentium chip for lower end hardware, or the Atom for lower end/low power PCs. I kind of think AMD is having troubles with the mobile APU because there might not be enough motherboards for the APU to work with different form factors. Or, they're just not advertising it well enough. Shoot, on the desktop, an A10 APU costs less than an i5 and do some real graphical whooping on the i5, which matters for gaming as well as running Windows 8 metro apps as well as GPU enabled Desktop apps. APU powered laptops cost less than their i5 counterparts.

Very curious...

I've got an iPad Mini it's a pretty useless little thing, it's slow, has WiFi dropouts and awfull resolution. The only good thing about it is that it's light, I only bought it for using on a trip to book hotels and flights and stuff. Now that I'm back home I rarely use it, preferring the iPad 3.
I've got an Android tablet as well, but once the Pros and the new Surface tablets come out I'll be doing some more shopping, I get a bit sick of the limitations of the iPads.

Considering the Mini is built on old Architecture, the iPad 2, it's impossible not to have all those problems, and IOS 6 is well known for WiFi dropouts, maybe you were lucky and got one with an A6 processor :)

They just rushed the Mini out because they were losing market share, don't get me wrong, it could be a good machine, but this is not it, maybe the next one.

Even though I'm not wrapped in the iPad Mini, I'm absolutely positive there is demand for devices of this size. I've got a HTC ONE X with 4.7" screen, but I find it just a bit small for some things like web browsing, looking for Hotels and Flights and Maps etc. I think something around this size is great for travelling and probably lots of other things.

The thing is at this size the resolution has to be very good, just like a phone, otherwise it makes it very hard to read, and that's the problem I find with the Mini I can barely make out the writing and after a while my eyes get fatigued. I know I'm not the only one, nearly everyone that's got one complains of the same thing.

I believe even MS is going to bring one out eventually, if they do, they'd better make sure the resolution is spot on or it will be a flop.

The Windows Blue update is reportedly going to optimize Windows RT for 7 and 8 inch screens. Maybe then, I'll take keenly on them, as if again, there is full sized USB port and some other neat things, but until then I'm not sold. The ipad mini is literally a slightly better ipod touch and double the screen size. To me, it's just another redundant device. But my question if that happens, how will Office work on a screen so small?
