Microsoft Fails AV-Test Certification

German antivirus lab AV-Test continually tests popular security suites against real world threats and reports the results every two months. For the most part, the researchers alternate between testing under Windows 7 and under Windows XP. The latest Windows 7 results show a significant drop in most scores. In particular, Microsoft failed to achieve certification.

Who is that lab anyway? Frankly I feel as long as you aren't going to a site that is possible unsafe then you probably are fine. I mean going to google will probably not give you a virus but visiting an unknown website probably will.

It's not surprising - pcpro found the same thing.

MS themselves said it was basic protection and 3rd party offerings are more complete.

It is just there to give some basic protection out of the box.

Yawn Yawn again

Who gives a toss about this sort of stuff --- especially when we are on a W8 Forum and their results are for W7 and XP --- which have a totally different security mechanism.

Also by the time this stuff is reported it's TOTALLY OUT OF DATE. Ms updates its av definitions DAILY and rushes out fixes for any emergency need that the normal update doesn't fix properly.

In any case if you surf properly and take even minimum precautions how likely really are you to get a virus.

Torrent users, or surfers being duped by "Fake looking sites" purporting to be a Bank etc or opening dubious email attachments -- well you've only got yourselves to blame.

Another danger is people who logon to those sites that "Offer to find drivers" or "Improve your PC performance" and download those apps also risk ending up with more on their computers than they expect.

PC security is the most overblown topic on the whole Internet -- any sensible precautions and with W8 you won't get a Virus.

I have to wonder, MSE was tested with Windows 7. It doesn't look like Windows Defender was tested with Windows 8.
