Windows 8 apps store cracks 20,000, most of them free

While 20,000 apps in an online store may seem paltry compared to the more than 700,000 apps in Apple's store and more than 600,000 apps in Google Play, for an upstart in the app trade like Microsoft, the milestone is significant.

Microsoft broke the 20,000 mark on Tuesday, according to Directions on Microsoft Windows app store watcher Wes Miller. Nearly 18,000, or 87 percent, of those apps are free, according to Miller.

I say great, but not too great. We need the top apps from ios and android on Windows 8, as well as a large game collection to make Windows 8 a worthy mobile contender and put down anything that might go against it.

One of the big issues with a new store is indeed having well known brands. However, equally good games and apps get created and released that should be given a chance too.

I was irked by Angry birds. They charge for it on the MS store, but it is free on Android and through Google chrome browser. Other than that,I really haven't found very many apps I even need or want. I grabbed a dictionary, recipes, craigslist and ebay. A nice clock app (tile) would be nice. So far the ones I have tried don't update unless you open them, kinda defeats the purpose. There is still much needed work on the app store, but for how new it is, I say it's going at a good pace.

A funny stat that came out just recently points that the Windows Store, though small and very new, is the fastest app store release on ANY platform, including the mac. Its store has been around for two years. The sad but funny stat is that there is a higher uptake of app downloads than the mac.

BOOM!!!

They need the ones that are popular. But I think they do have most of the popular ones. They need to get instagram that is one of the popular ones they still don't have which puts them at a disadvantage. But good thing they have the other two popular ones integrated which means no need to even get the actual apps. But with if the rumors are true that they are shifting to another new type of program(possibly just a rumor) for windows blue or whatever it might put developers in even less of a mood to create good apps until that version arrives.

another big issue is a lot of the apps freeze up or do not work properly especially the game apps. Doesn't Microsoft test them first before putting them out there?

I wish they would download. I've got several that are pending and haven't downloaded. I've stopped them and tried to download them again and get the same thing. I've had one that did install.

They may not all be perfect, and I assume there are some bad ones among the 20,000, but I'm rather liking the ones that I find. The Kindle book reader is working out well for me. And Hearts Deluxe is the nicest-looking game of hearts I've ever played.

Sure makes it convenient when my young niece and nephew come over and want to play on my computer. They know enough about the concept of apps and app stores that all they have to do is look through the list, and click on something that looks interesting. Couldn't be more simple.

I agree that it needs the big players here. 1) a real pintrest app (2) a real facebook app and (3) a tap a talk style tile would be great as well...

LOL, glad you got it sorted firebird :) Murphy sucks that way
