What would be the advantage of 128bit. MS has a looooong way to go to even fill the shoes of the 64bit address space. I think 192GB is the high water mark right now - and that is peanuts compared to the open prairie behind it.

Regarding the XP migration, I see some movement. In my Florida computer club (650 members) and a lot of little old ladies, I see more and more interest in Win7.

I'd give it at least a decade before 128 bit is common place.

But then again 10 years is a long time when it comes to technology.

Somehow I can not believe in 128-bit Windows 8, nor do I believe in 32-bit Windows 8. My bet is we get only the x64 option.

if they go 64bit only, they leave a lot of programs in the dust.

There has to be a cut off point somewhere.

I really think Microsoft leaves it to Virtual PC to handle 32-bit apps.

That would be nice if it worked. I had to use vBox because vPC gave me all kinds of problems.

For us bit-fiddlers, that is easy to say. We use the PC for fun. But if you are a business and invested thousands, if not millions of Dollars in 32bit programs to run your business, that is a different story. It will all depend on what the Fortune 500 companies tell MS. If they need 32bit, we'll get it.

You are right, of course. But someday, somehow we (and those Fortune 500 companies) have to start thinking about the future. All new hardware is 64-bit, software development is going on that direction. Is it Win8 or Win9, I'm not sure though I think it's already Win8, we have to move to a 64-bit environment.

As in any other major change in global IT policy, some will be hurt. But the change is coming, and I think it should come.

I think that MS along with developers need to first get 64 bit OS's and programing set in concert before jumping into 128 bit. And, as to XP it is time to put it to rest; those who continue to use it are just spinning their wheels in an attempt to make themselves believe it is the right thing to do. Hopefully when the beta for Win 8 is release we can get alway from any discussion over XP, and how much better it is than any of the newer Windows OSs.
