U.S. consumers hesitant to make switch to Windows 8

Most Windows users in the U.S. know about Windows 8 but few have immediate plans to upgrade to Microsoft's newest operating system. What's more, about one-third of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP users who are ready to buy a new personal computer say they intend to switch to an Apple product.
Those are the findings of an unusually broad survey of Windows PC users conducted by antivirus company Avast and released exclusively to USA TODAY.
The survey results underscore lukewarm response to Windows 8, which introduces a radical new PC user interface involving use of a touch screen in addition to a keyboard and mouse.

Rest of story here:

I'm pretty hesitant to upgrade to Windows 8....

Your free Windows 8 adventure is getting close to end, you will have to purchase it or get back to ... what is the last Windows you have a License ?

They are already doing so since few years, Apple sell more desktops than HP pr Dell or Acer

Good Luck! See Ya! Brand new Apple users will find Macs to be completely intuitive!

The participants in the survey are probably not aware of the security improvements in Windows 8 and are most likely customers of Avast - ...also - Does Avast advertise in USA TODAY?

Why would Avast want to put a good spin on Windows 8 since 8 does not need Avast? :sarc:

Either way, the article seems about spot on with the comments I have heard from friends, coworkers and other forum sites.

Regular users, sadly don't put that much stock in security. Look at how many run windows XP and don't run Windows update on a regular basis...or use tons of 3rd party software without patching it.

This is true, and that's probably the reason why Windows 8 is the way it is. It's better optimized for automatic updating without user input, has built in anti-virus, and has a new app model that doesn't bog down performance.

I'm pretty hesitant to upgrade to Windows 8....

I agree with you on this. I have used numerous versions including the RTM prior to launch and I am just happier with Windows 7. It's secure, fast and does what I need it to do. If I had a touch screen I might consider it down the road but otherwise I see it having little benefit over 7 other than a slightly faster boot time (which is not much with my specs to be honest, maybe a .5 second diff from my current 6 second load time). I see 8 as a fail and unless MS comes out with a more "business friendly" version in the next year or so, I see Windows 7 staying put as the flagship for a long time.

This is nothing new. after over a year with Windows XP, less than 10% of PCs had it. Operating system sales aren't like movie sales. You're in it for the long haul.

But most of all, the vast bulk of Windows sales is through sales of new PCs. It has always been that way. Consumers buying it to upgrade a computer has traditionally been a small percentage. People usually don't upgrade a computer until they have to. And "have to" usually means the computer is too slow to run this or so-and-so software/hardware won't work on the old hardware.

Of course consumers would be hesitant windows 8 offers mostly a touch based improvement. I don't feel there are any remarkable differences on the desktop. Visually there is too much clashing within the desktop and between metro and desktop environments. The only possible good changes is adding the ribbon(and this is only for people that liked ribbon to begin with) there are a few things I would have liked for them to improve on for ease of access and probably other things that would have benefited the user. Most people don't purchase the actual windows upgrade anyway. They buy the computer that already has it installed. With the price that the "best" version of windows go for you might as well buy a computer with it already installed. The only real good reason this time around is that it's discounted if only it wasn't limited and possibly a bit lower.

You are not doing anything wrong - you are entitled to love win8.

The odd bit is all you friends and relatives seem gung ho about it too.

That is different from my experience - and of most others as far as I can gather.

You're telling me. I was expecting more iffy and restiveness and hesitation based off the feelings and notions of some here on this forum, but it I've yet to come across it in real life. My experience with showing people Windows 8 and having them use it has been real interesting. Most of the times people are more oogling at it, other times time people find it to be "cool" and a few times it completely has blown minds away.

I really don't make a presentation of it, I just go through the basics how I would normally show people how to do anything. I'm not freaking out saying that they HAVE to have it as this is the future and is going to blow your mind everyday and you'll love it even more and more. I just show the Charms, app navigation, apps, tiles, colors, and the Desktop. Just those mundane things. Maybe THEY just get enthused from seeing it?

And if I could sell snow to eskimos, I REALLY should pursue a career of salesmanship.
