The future of Windows 8 is still on the desktop, says Fuji

I suppose it is possible to use it as your main desktop os.

That doesn't mean it is very good for that.

Oh ok, just read through the article, just sums up what I've thought about desktops. They're touch AIOs not black boxes.

Only tech heads use black boxes. (The conclusion that MANY have already come to at this point in time)

What's with this tech heads crap? In my crowd of friends and family the desktop PC is by far the PC device of choice and use. As far as your so called "tech heads" go, I'm it. Laptops are, for most of them, a convenience item that they aren't going to buy unless they absolutely need one. Maybe I'm just hanging out with the wrong crowd, or maybe not. ;) The few times I've showed Windows 8 to anybody they thought is was some kind of joke I was playing on them. Unfortunately the jokes on us desktop PC users. The ones that put Microsoft where it is today.

I say tech heads because more and more and more people (age group demographics at play here) are going more for laptop PCs than they are desktops. Every year, there's a report from the OEMs saying that desktop PC sales are declining. That can be said because they last longer and can be upgraded when needed, but when was the last time you heard or saw a normal person install Windows and pop in a new video card? This would be standard place for tech heads, like a good majority of people on this forum. I may be hanging out with the wrong crowd too, :) but the crowd I'm around all have laptop PCs. A few have and use a desktop, but laptops are primarily used. From my personal account, I can name all the desktop PCs I've worked on past few years, and I've only worked like five or six desktops versus like probably 33 laptops and netbooks.

Speaking of Windows 8 then, I've yet to come across someone who thought it was a joke, but then again, I must be hanging out with the wrong crowd. ;)

May be because Microsoft don't help, Apple sell more and more Mac years after years, they now sell more than Dell or HP or Acer

The Company sold 26.0 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 28 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 17.0 million iPads during the quarter, an 84 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.0 million Macs during the quarter, a two percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 6.8 million iPods, a 10 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

Desktops outlive laptops hands down. Between people keeping their desktop PC for what seems like forever, and people like me that build their own, I'm not surprised that preassembled OEM desktop sales are down. That doesn't mean desktop PC's are dyeing bread though. There will always be some people that only see what they want to see an ignore the rest.

If you go on Eggxpert forum ( forum of new egg) you will see that many peoples with 0 knowledge ask info on how to build a PC, I can't blame them if they own an HP before. few years back, only few peoples was building their PC, with Internet and forums, more and more build one. Those stats show Dell, HP, Acer and go you have to add the Motherboards sales to it (this is not easy to do, not all motherboards go in new PC)

No, cost effective as a whole new desktop PC, minus the monitor, can cost about 3-400 dollars.

I belong to a world wide self-help organization with several millions of members who work on a pro bono basis. And my contribution is to help people with PC problems in my area. Almost without exception, everyone I've helped, has a tower, and a large proportion have at least one if not two additional portable devices ... most common being a mobile touch fone with iNet access, and a much, much smaller proportion a laptop or tablet.

I personally have two towers and a Sony Ericsson Android touchfone ... and a couple of archived dinosaurs for old times sake ... one with Win98 2Ed ... because I lke to unwind by sitting there in a semi-mesmeric state watching the progress bar when it defrags .... Triple lol!

Most of the the members of this orgamization are just average working class Joes. Execs and managers can afford to pay. And I don't do it because I'm oh so altruistic! I enjoy it as a hobby and it helps me understand my own PCs better.

I recently had a problem with a Thomson WiFi modem/router model TG782G setting a security password so nobody could access the modem from the IP address. This is seprate from the WEP password to protect your wireless access. Telstra's tech support, (Australia's biggest phone company), couldn't tell me the default password, even after escalating the problem.

When you open the modem interface via IP addres, after a clean re-set, and go to Tool Box > User management > Change password, it has 3 boxes: Old password, New password, Confirm Password. Aside from Telstra tech support, I researched it on Google and various forums and nobody seemed to know the default.

I tried mutiple different possibles, and after 3 attempts it would lock you out permanently requiring a modem reset. Quite by accident I found out why no one knew the default password. And that's because there is no default password! When you first open change password, after a modem re-set, you leave the Old Password blank; and just fill in New and Confirm Password.

That kind of thing can drive you nuts.

Hi area66. Glad you enjoyed! I don't know why, but used to sit there for hours watching that, and getting a rush when it got towards the end and suddenly started leaping ahead like Superman jumping sky scrapers with a huge single bound! LOL! :thumb:

They were the good old days, when you really had to work to make things work! With DOS, 16bit, 1GB Hard Drive and System File Check taking 2 -3 hours! Me thinks we might be a bit spoiled rotten with SATA3 SSD HDs and SLI Linked graphics cards, and radiator cooled CPUs with 6 cores and 12 threads?
