Who is Julie Larson-Green? Meet the new head of Windows

Microsoft announced on November 12 that Windows President Steven Sinofsky is leaving, effective immediately. Meet the new head of Windows engineering, Julie Larson-Green.

I don't know the back story here, but here's what I do know: Microsoft President Steven Sinofsky is leaving Microsoft, effective immediately -- just days after launching his babies, Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface. And the new head of Windows is Julie Larson-Green.

As my CNET colleague Jay Greene reported, Microsoft is saying Sinofsky's departure was mutually agreed upon. Sinofsky is leaving to pursue other unspecified interests.

In the shake-up, announced on November 12, Microsoft said that Larson-Green will be promoted to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering. Tami Reller will continue on as chief financial officer and chief marketing officer and will assume responsibility for the business of Windows. Both executives will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, according to Microsoft's press release.

It's going to be really interesting to see how Windows 9 pans out. Some inside sources at Microsoft say that Windows will be on a biyearly release cycle. The ONE person to trust to meet that schedule: Steve Sinofsky.

I like that a person that is huge on user experience is running the Windows division, especially someone who helped to build the Start Screen.

It's funny to see how fast they replace Sinofsky, it's like Balmer know Sinofsky will resign before Sinofsky think about it. For sure she look more sweet than Sinofsky

More photogenic, that's for sure.

Maybe she has better grip on how customers should be treated.

We will see.

I'm happy to see a woman lead the windows division. However, if she was part of the decision behind some of windows 8's user-interface bad ideas then I don't think she of all people should be leading the next version.

Well, she was behind the push for the Ribbon UI in Office 2007 (remember how people initially HATED it and didn't like using it?) and brought it to Windows 8. I love using the Ribbon in Explorer, less right clicking I need to do and less dragging my mouse around to select files.

She is also a huge user experience nerd from what I've read about her, so I wonder how that will influence future Windows versions.
