Windows Defender Stops 85 Percent of Common Malware

Glad to know that defender is on par with the other popular anti viruses.

Yea the new Defender is great but nothing I found beats Hitman Pro.

The Windows Defender is no longer the Windows Defender! That's the reason you now see malwares flagged and trojans hidden in zip files for dld downloads are spotted even when stored on a separate drive.

Now you will be asking what is different about WD compared to WD? Simply put the MS Security Essentials got a new name recently! Or I should say the "much needed updated version of" the MS SE was renamed to WD and packed into 8 as WD. See how that works.

When first getting the CP on the initial scan revealed only what the WD in 7 could never find. Nor could the original MS SE download and run on 7. The paid for av program found everything when compared however with no other programs tried out able to do that except for this new form of MS SE found in 8. That's one of the few plus factors seen with 8 to make a note of.

I use Eset Smart Security.

The article says the exact opposite.

The built in windows defender is better than windows 8 on it's own.

It is better than nothing.

However, it is not as good as 3rd party a/v programs.

I was somewhat surprised to see the new form of SE relabeled to WD actually find the same type of trojans hidden inside old XP downloads stashed away on one of the storage that VIPRE Internet Security 2012 found. The improvements seen were for once actually adding in av protection as well as malicious code detection since only VIPRE had ever found them. AVG failed, Avast failed, and other spyware removal programs had all failed to discovery what had been only found by the paid for software on all previous occasions!

So MS finally got their act together and added some actual protections in this time around a bit too late for 7 since the origina MS SE doesn't do much! One former program I used along with AVG in past years, Spyware Terminator, would tend to find what AVG and other programs like Avast and Malwarebytes all seem to fail at. That however is no longer a free program since they recently added av protection into that one and charge a one time fee for the full version.

The new WD works until you go to install your regular protections and then lies dormant. That's how that one works. Generally one program would first have to be removed first to allow another av program's installer to proceed while this one simply deactivates itself upon another program's installation which will work for most in that regard.

MS in WIndows 8 changed the name of Essentials to Defender since it is grandfathered into anti-trust rulings as a legacy component of the OS. Of course at that time it was seen as no threat to the Pay-V's. But it's not your father's Defender.

That's for sure! I can remember years back long before WD came along they used to have an MS Anti-Spyware whatever that didn't actually do much either. At least MS has some references available at their Safety and Security Center to look over. PC & Internet Security Tools | PC Security Software

Most malwares can be avoided entirely while some sites are clever in how they slip things past protections that are inplace. When not knowing about how to flag bad sites having a good web filtering inplace can steer you away from the 'Nasties"!
