Microsoft Boxes Apple's Ears With Surface Tablet

You really don't get a sense of just how limited the iPad is until you actually explore the Surface tablet that Microsoft released last week. It is like the designers sat down over beers and argued over every single shortcoming they found in the iPad and then built into Surface just the right features to make the iPad look inadequate.

Haven't seen a "Surface" in the wild has of yet, so unable to comment on that specific point. I do know that I am just a little upset with Apple for not porting IO 6 to the first gen iPad. . .

Surface seems great, although I have an iPad, and am writing this off of it right now, I am a windows fan, and look forward to buying the pro version of it.

Either way there is still a lot of hate and grumbling against it. It's a first gen tablet, and I think people are expecting too much of it...

I'm also working on getting w8 on my iPad instead of ios (kill me)

I think Tepid and the article was referring to the Op system included with the iPad which falls short as an Operating system when compared to even the RT version of Windows 8.

The Pro version will mop the floor with the iPad simply because it comes with a fully functional Op system.

Of course, if it costs $1,000 and people see the iPad at $499....it might be a little less compelling. Even as a tech nerd, at that price point, I'd be looking at laptops instead. Laptops have bigger displays, ability to add additional displays, often has more USB and ports like eSata, optical drives, more storage space, user replaceable batteries, etc.

I agree with most things in the article except there's one big lacking point for the Surface. It is still sorely lacking in apps. Hopefully that will change with time, hopefully not too much time. So while the Surface may fill that niche that exists between a tablet and a laptop, without any real nice applications, it is a moot point.

And yes I am dictating this on a third-generation iPad using voice dictation. This is my second iPad. I bought my first iPad the first day the iPad came out. I never bought something on the first day of the release before, and especially not an Apple device on the first day. But that's not because I'm an Apple fan, but rather I really wanted a tablet.

That said, in the last week my iPad usage has fallen dramatically. With the release of Windows 8, Samsung has finally released the drivers for my Slate. So I really started to put my Slate through the paces and realize it is so much more than an iPad. Yes it has terrible battery life, and why wouldn't it with an i5 processor. I also have to admit that the sweet part of the deal is the Windows desktop. But the surface RT lacks that desktop, except for a few bundled apps that Microsoft puts in it.

So until the Windows store get some really good metro UI apps, the full potential of the surface remains limited. Perhaps in another six months the story will be different...

What make you think peoples need a full OS in their tablets ? Last summer vacation my wife was sending right away her picture to friends with her iPad , can you do this with a surface, NO , you need Wifi connectivity, let me tell you in Disney World in Florida, you have to be lucky to find wi-fi, they don't even have in their room.

And how many Android and Apple apps were there the day they came out. it took a while to chatch on and for people to learn the code and start producing even decent apps, they were not all there either.

And if you are speaking of WinRT, then yes, it will be a while to start seeing good apps for it.
But, with Win8 pro, you can install anything on it.

So to also answer Area66 post.... Yes, there is a need for a full blown OS Tablet. No, laptops will not last, they will be replaced by HyBrid/Convertables. There is a market place and a far more usefulness to them than any ipad or android, you should seriously take a real look at the capabilities of Win8 across platforms.

And, as far as them not having WWAN, that is a valid complaint in this day and age.
This should be about standard on all portable systems by now. Laptops included, ahh but it is not.

Yes yes, the status symbol. I don't begrudge anyone doing whatever they want with their own money btw. it is theirs and mine is mine.
kia and bmw have the same in common as crackers and nails. Apple and PC are far more similar. and it's all in the name more than anything else.
It is not just an opinion, it is factually able to be proven through benchmarks.

You could argue that the software available for the Mac is superior, but that would also be a bit of a misnomer these days
I concede that use to be true, once upon a time, but not anymore. that is more about preference than superiority these days.

There is nothing magical with the components themselves. However, the build quality is pretty solid, you won't find a mac with a crappy display (the same cannot be said of many PC laptops), mac's come back out of sleep faster than about 90% of the pc market, their magnetic charger is awesome (as my PC laptop has hit the floor many times), and their warranty through the Apple store is far better than any PC I have ever dealt with.

You could argue that the software available for the Mac is superior, but that would also be a bit of a misnomer these days

Most is preference. But it's also what's standard too. For example, I do some audio stuff on the side. Find any recording studio, and I'd bet that in nearly all cases...the computer running Pro Tools is likely a Mac. So, if you work in this field and they use Mac's...this might be the better choice for a personal use computer of your own. Same is true of any high end graphics department, they are almost always going to run Photoshop on a Mac. It's just the way it is.

I choose to NOT buy a Mac...but there is so much more to it than dollar per hardware ounce.

Tepid. you don't get it, Many get a Mac because it's a Mac, it's cool to have a Mac.... it's like Jeans, many spend over $ 100 for jeans to look cool, ( I buy $ 20 Jeans at Wal-Mart ) Me I own a Mac because I like different kind of Computers, I miss so much the time where we have Apple, IBM, Commodore, Amiga , tandy, this was a great time.

You have many other reasons to buy a Mac. Aside if you use a computer to go on Facebook and Google recipes no need for benchmark, any recent device can do it, so why not a Mac it's so cool.

Hi there

IMO the advantage of the APPLE warranty IMO is grossly overdone.
At least in W. Europe you always get the manufacturers warranty (usually 12 - 24 months) and all I can say in nearly 40 years or so of buying all sorts of electronic equipment inc computers etc I've NEVER had to return a single piece of kit. - If something has got broken (e.g Disk drives) it's usually my fault --spilling coffee on them or dropping them.

Sometimes kit does get broken or isn't fit for purpose --but this is a lot rarer than you think and is often caused by excessive handling, incorrect mounting, excessive force on parts when plugging on to the computer case, lack of adequate ventilation etc or whatever.

Apple really has a fight on its hands now --and those of you who want to bother to check -- I predicted in several posts around 6 months ago that Apple's peak time had now passed.

While the Fruit Company still has a healthy revenue --there isn't much new (if anything) coming to the table. The Surface tablet seems to have got decent reviews (and I'm not really a tablet lover), and even the new Windows 8 phones seem to be getting approval from the market.

Apple will shrink back into a Niche market -- nothing wrong with that -- but it won't be nearly the same sort of company that it has been.

Ms isn't the dying old Dinosaur that some people think it is.

(I still prefer the W7 interface for a desktop --but that's me--a lot of people are quite pleased with W8 - which surprised me too)..

Cheers

There is nothing magical with the components themselves. However, the build quality is pretty solid, you won't find a mac with a crappy display (the same cannot be said of many PC laptops), mac's come back out of sleep faster than about 90% of the pc market, their magnetic charger is awesome (as my PC laptop has hit the floor many times), and their warranty through the Apple store is far better than any PC I have ever dealt with.

Really? Solid? I've never had to send out any of my tech gadgets out for repairs and yet both my iPod and iPhone required repairs, they better have far better warranty. With Apple it's all looks, pretty designs and pretty icons but similar spec'd PC workstations or laptops out perform Apples products. Sadly their enterprise XRaids and XServes have cost our company $100,000's in downtime costs, but they look real nice! My Dell M1330 laptop has the same NVidia GPU, Intel Proc and RAM configuration as my MacBook, my Dell out performs it any day of the week. I stopped using the MacBook with my guitar because the Dell out performs it. Transcoding a movie on my Dell averages 6 hours, same settings to transcode the same movie on my MacBook takes over 14 hours. The large graphic jobs at my work are processed on PC workstations while the smaller jobs are sent to Mac operators. I could go on and on...

Apple makes good products but just because they look pretty doesn't make them better.

It's one of the things that has made them sell better.

If the devices that have win8 on them have as much appeal - they will sell too. So will win8 because it just happens to be on them.
